Application
This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to re-cover footwear using glue or stitching methods.
This unit of competency applies to stripping and re-covering of shoes with new material.
Work may be conducted in small to large scale enterprises and may involve individual and team activities. Work is performed within defined procedures under direct supervision.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Determine job requirements |

Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) |

Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times |

Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs |

Identify job requirements from specifications, drawings, job sheets or work instructions |

Prepare to re-cover footwear |
2.1 |
Inspect shoes, identify repair materials and advise customer on costs prior to commencing shoe repair |

Prepare and review job sheet to ensure all requirements are included |

Determine appropriate method of re-covering the shoe and select, check and prepare appropriate tools and materials |

2.4 |
Strip down shoe to separate upper, heel block and sole unit without causing damage to the shoe components |

Make patterns and secure fabric |

Mask heel block using appropriate masking process |
3.2 |
Cut out, check and adjust pattern as required |

Cover upper using appropriate masking technique |

Cut out material to match patterns, specifications and client requirements |

Secure fabric to upper |

Re-last the underneath of the shoe |

Finish and check shoe |

Reattach heel to the sole |

Secure sole using appropriate securing process |

Check cover for fit and finish and make adjustments as appropriate |

Ink, clean, polish and finish off sole and heels to match original shoe colour as close as possible |

Package, label and store re-covered shoes and maintain records |
