Application of the Unit 

This unit applies to operating machines and performing repairs. It involves the operation of related mending equipment.

Laundry or operating procedures may relate to:

  • repairing and resizing
  • recycling
  • condemning articles
  • recoding
  • repairs on theatre linen (according to AS 2892)
  • manual handling techniques
  • safe use of machines and related equipment
  • reporting procedures for faults, safety checks, etc.
  • quality assurance

Work may be conducted in small to large scale enterprises and may involve individual and team activities. Work is performed within defined procedures under direct supervision.

The application of this unit is according to OH&S practices of the enterprise and workplace practices, which may include:

  • requirements prescribed by legislation, awards, agreements and conditions of employment
  • standard operating procedures
  • work instructions
  • oral, written and visual communication
  • quality practices, including responsibility for maintenance of own work quality and contribution to quality improvement of team or section output
  • housekeeping
  • tasks related to environmental protection, waste disposal, pollution control and recycling

This unit requires the application of skills associated with problem solving repair requirements, planning and organising machines and equipment and applying knowledge of repairing processes. This unit also requires an ability to complete repair records.

2 Operate mending equipment

2.1 Product is checked for repair or condemning

2.2 Repair requirements  for damaged products are determined and performed in accordance with required specifications

2.3 Specialists or appropriate personnel are consulted where necessary on repair requirements

2.4 Equipment is operated in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and workplace procedures

2.5 Operating faults are identified and reported

3 Maintain product repair records

3.1 Finished product repair records are accurately maintained to meet workplace requirements
