Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide continuity services for make-up and hair in film, television, theatre and photographic productions. It involves preparing for continuity services, documenting hair and make-up used in different scenes and advising required personnel of any changes.

The unit applies to those who check the make-up and hair of performers is consistent when scenes are watched in the correct sequence, irrespective of the order in which they were shot. They are crucial in making sure there are smooth transitions between shots and scenes, thus facilitating post-production editing.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare for hair and make-up continuity

1.1 Determine continuity breakdown using required documentation

1.2 Confirm hair and make-up requirements with required personnel

1.3 Plan continuity activities according to hair and make-up requirements

1.4 Prepare hair and make-up continuity documentation for each scene

2. Undertake hair and make-up continuity activities

2.1 Check performer hair and make-up matches appearance at end of previous sequential take according to requirements

2.2 Capture continuity notes and photographs throughout shoots and file for reference as required

2.3 Adjust hair and make-up during productions according to production and safety requirements

2.4 Update hair and make-up continuity documentation throughout productions

2.5 Maintain records of hair and make-up continuity details for performers and production personnel according to production requirements

3. Maintain communications during shoot

3.1 Advise required personnel of changes to make-up, hair and appearance

3.2 Advise required personnel of hair and make-up continuity issues throughout shoots in line with workplace procedures and production requirements

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • maintain make-up and hair continuity according to at least two different production requirements.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • identify hair and make-up continuity requirements and document requirements scene by scene
  • identify impact of the filming process on appearance of make-up and hair
  • create detailed records, including photographs of hair and make-up continuity information for productions
  • work collaboratively with cast and crew during productions
  • ensure materials for maintaining make-up and hair are on hand during productions.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • common production requirements for maintaining make-up and hair continuity including:
  • when to adjust make-up and hair
  • safety procedures when adjusting make-up and hair
  • accuracy of continuity documentation
  • timelines
  • needs of required personnel during production
  • protocols for interaction between cast and crew during film shoots
  • impact of process of shooting film productions on hair and make-up continuity operations
  • creative and technical aspects of productions required for the process of maintaining make-up and hair continuity
  • administrative procedures and documentation associated with maintaining hair and make-up continuity.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • scripts for analysis
  • hair and make-up products and equipment
  • productions requiring make-up and hair continuity
  • interactions with others required to demonstrate the performance evidence.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
