Application

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required by workers who provide legislated and protective services to children and young people at substantial risk of abuse or neglect, or who are subject to court mandates or orders.

This unit applies to community service work in security contexts.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

ELEMENTS 

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA 

Elements describe the essential outcomes

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Promote cooperative behaviour.

1.1. Communicate positive and realistic expectations of behaviour to children and young people.

1.2. Use clear communication, suggesting positive and motivational options to encourage cooperation of children and young people.

1.3. Draw attention of children and young people to positive aspects of their behaviour.

1.4. Support children and young people to accept responsibility for meeting requirements of intervention and program.

2. Liaise with children and young people.

2.1. Identify and assess children and young people’s needs.

2.2. Discuss identified needs with children and young people and others identified by the children and young people.

2.3. Select and organise services according to identified needs.

3. Liaise with service providers.

3.1. Ensure providers receive relevant information regarding the children and young people, including completed consent and confidentiality forms.

3.2. Complete all documents accurately and in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.

3.3. Ensure allocated service delivery continues to match requirements of children and young people and implement changes as required to better meet their needs.

4. Coordinate community programs.

4.1. Assess specific needs of children and young people and match to an existing program.

4.2. Consult relevant community organisations to identify available programs to meet specific needs of children and young people.

4.3. Identify content, purpose and access protocols of existing programs.

4.4. Employ communication techniques to engage children and young people and provide information about programs.

5. Fulfil legislative responsibilities.

5.1. Provide children and young people with community supervision in accordance with relevant legislation, and organisational policies and procedures.

5.2. Provide supervision to assist children and young people to address their needs and issues.

5.3. Source and validate information to write reports and case file notes.

5.4. Prepare court ordered reports in accordance with relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.

5.5. Consult children and young people in the preparation of reports in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.

Assessment requirements

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit in the context of the job role, and:

  • support and promote positive and cooperative behaviour for at least one child or young person, including:
  • communicating clearly and positively to the child or young person
  • identifying the child or young person’s needs, and matching them to, and organising, services and programs
  • liaising with the child or young person’s service providers and providing all information required
  • undertaking reporting requirements and record keeping including the preparation of court ordered reports
  • monitoring service delivery and child or young person’s needs and making changes to better meet their needs
  • providing supervision of child or young person
  • communicating all relevant information regarding services and programs to child or young person as required to meet their needs.

Knowledge Evidence

Demonstrated knowledge required to complete the tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit:

  • children and young people and their special needs as individuals and as part of a group
  • behaviour management models, theories and techniques
  • services and programs available and associated referral processes
  • communication techniques to engage and interact with children and young people
  • organisational record-keeping protocols
  • writing techniques required to complete records accurately
  • legislation and responsibilities relevant to providing supervision in the community
  • organisational policies and procedures.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must be demonstrated in the workplace, with the addition of simulations and scenarios where the full range of contexts and situations have not been provided in the workplace.

Assessment must ensure:

  • access to facilities, equipment and resources that reflect real working conditions and model industry operating conditions and contingencies
  • access to organisational policies and procedures
  • opportunities for engagement with children or young people.

Assessors must satisfy the Standards for Registered Training Organisations’ requirements for assessors.
