Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to support collection management for captive animals.

This unit applies to wildlife animal keepers or carers who are required to take responsibility for their own work with limited responsibility for other workers and volunteers.

No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria of this unit.

There must be evidence that the individual has:

  • identified, collected, recorded and interpreted data for at least two captive animals
  • accessed and interpreted at least one institutional or regional collection plan
  • followed at least one collection management plan.

Knowledge Evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • the purpose, variations and application of an animal keeping information system and software
  • principles and practices for supporting collection management, including:
  • Australasian Species Management Program (ASMP) and ASMP Regional Census and Plan
  • ASMP guidelines and criteria for studbook keeping
  • basic genetic principles for the management of captive animal populations, including small population biology and concepts of inbreeding and outbreeding
  • captive animal policies
  • collection planning requirements
  • international agreements and conventions such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources conservation status categories
  • principles and constraints of wildlife conservation
  • principles of animal welfare and ethics for managing captive animals
  • principles of taxonomy relevant to population management
  • report formats for captive animal management plans.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment of skills must take place under the following conditions:

  • physical conditions:
  • a workplace or an environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting
  • resources, equipment and materials:
  • real captive animals
  • equipment and resources including personal protective equipment used in managing collections of captive animals
  • institutional and regional collection plans
  • animal keeping information management systems
  • specifications:
  • policies and procedures relating to captive animals.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
