Application
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to support population planning and management for animals.
This unit applies to individuals who work in animal carer, keeper or aquarist roles, undertaking individual and team activities in small to large scale animal facilities. They perform work under broad direction and are required to take responsibility for their own work, including carrying out assigned tasks, organising processes, and working to schedules.
All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures according to Commonwealth and state/territory health and safety and animal welfare regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence
An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit.
There must be evidence that the individual has:
- collected, recorded and interpreted data for at least two animals or a small population within the facility
- accessed and interpreted at least one facility and one regional species plan and identified:
- the factors that influence selection of one species within the facility
- value of current and planned numbers for the species
- actions needed to achieve planned numbers
- carried out two routine tasks related to species population planning and management.
Knowledge Evidence
An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:
- routine tasks relating to species population planning and management including:
- observing, monitoring and recording behaviour and social interactions
- collecting data on individual animals age, gender, reproductive history and family connections
- purpose of population planning, including:
- wildlife conservation
- species recovery
- species and small population management
- regional monitoring
- common species population planning and management terms
- facility policies and requirements for species population planning
- purpose and application of facility animal information system and software
- principles and practices for species population planning, including:
- overview of Australasian Species Management Program (ASMP), including ASMP Regional Census and Plan, and ASMP guidelines and criteria for studbook keeping
- international agreements and conventions such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources conservation status categories
- basic genetic principles for the management of animal populations, including small population biology and concepts of inbreeding and outbreeding
- principles of taxonomy relevant to population planning and management
- key compliance requirements of relevant state/territory legislation relevant to species population planning, including:
- animal welfare
- environment protection and biodiversity
- wildlife trade
- biosecurity.
Assessment Conditions
Assessment of the skills in this unit of competency must take place under the following conditions:
- an animal care workplace or an environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting
- resources, equipment and materials:
- individual animals or group of animals as specified in the performance evidence
- equipment and resources for recording data
- facility information management systems
- facility and regional population plans
- relevant policies and procedures relating to species population planning and management.
Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
