Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENTS

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1

Prepare for load transfer

1.1

Job hazards are identified and required actions taken to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards

1.2

Working area is prepared and maintained in accordance with industry standards, codes of practice and workplace procedures

1.3

Unsafe work practices and/or faulty equipment are reported in accordance with workplace procedures

1.4

Correct personal protective equipment (PPE) is identified and worn in accordance with workplace procedures

2

Assess lifting requirements

2.1

Work operations plan is examined and lift requirements are identified, including job method and sequence, control measures and safety procedures

2.2

Coordination requirements with other site personnel are confirmed

2.3

Load mass, dimensions and centre of gravity are determined

2.4

Appropriate lifting gear, equipment and packing, including slings, ropes, shackles, eye bolts and spreaders, are selected from safety charts and safe working load (SWL)/working load limit (WLL) tags, and assembled and checked for serviceability

2.5

Damaged or worn items are tagged, rejected and reported to appropriate personnel for follow-up action

3

Secure load

3.1

Lifting and anchorage points are correctly identified

3.2

Lifting gear, equipment and packing are connected to load, and load is secured to lifting device in accordance with workplace and manufacturer specifications, guidelines and regulatory requirements

3.3

Load is lifted, suspended off lifting plane and checked to ensure it is appropriately rigged and secured according to workplace procedures

3.4

Corrective actions are undertaken when preliminary lift assessment reveals unacceptable operational situation

3.5

Tag lines are fixed to load in accordance with work operation plan and/or in consultation with other personnel, as required, due to wind conditions and site hazards and obstacles

4

Detach load

4.1

Slinging attachments are released from load without injury to personnel or damage to workplace operating procedures

4.2

Damage to load and site is identified and reported in accordance with workplace procedures

4.3

Lifting gear, equipment and packing are maintained and stored in accordance with workplace and manufacturer specifications, guidelines and regulatory requirements

Foundation Skills

Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.
