This unit applies to the machine stitching of soles for welt or veldschoen constructed shoes. Work may be conducted in small to large scale enterprises and may involve individual and team activities. Work is performed within defined procedures under direct supervision. The application of this unit is according to OHS practices of the enterprise and workplace practices, which may include:
This unit requires the application of skills associated with planning and organising the safe and effective use of sole stitching processes and technology. This unit also requires an ability to interpret and communicate job related information, check the quality of outcomes and identify and address operational problems. Self management skills are used to ensure work standards are achieved. |

2 Preparation of shoe |
2.1 Sole is secured to welting prior to sole stitching, if re-stitching a welt constructed shoe 2.2 Upper and sole is secured to the inner sole if re-stitching a veldschoen constructed shoe |
3 Prepare workstation |
3.1 Machine is cleaned and checked 3.2 Records are kept |
4 Set up machine |
4.1 Machine is set up, adjusted and switched on in accordance with manufacturer instructions and workplace requirements 4.2 Tension is set according to specifications 4.3 Wax pot is checked 4.4 Shoe guide is checked for correct distance 4.5 Channel knife is checked for correct positioning for welt or veldschoen constructed shoe 4.6 Stitch length is set and tested against required specifications 4.7 Machine is tested for correct operations |
5 Perform stitching |
5.1 Shoe is positioned accurately consistent with manufacturers procedures and stitched using sole stitcher 5.2 Threads are trimmed and burnished as required |
6 Identify poor machine performance |
6.1 The performance of the machine is regularly checked for signs of faulty operations and action taken in accordance with workplace procedures |
7 Check and finish work |
7.1 Final product is checked to ensure enterprise quality requirements are met 7.2 Shoes are stained, cleaned, polished and finished off to match as close as possible original shoe colour 7.3 Repaired shoes are packaged, labelled and stored |
