Release 1

This version first released with ICP Printing and Graphic Arts Training Package Version 1.0.

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

  • produce TWO basic relief printing jobs (if possible, including at least one in-line process) according to manufacturer’s and job specifications and enterprise procedures using either a platen, cylinder or rotary printing machine (jobs should be completed while maintaining product quality standards, and production problems should be rectified with minimum downtime)
  • correctly shut down machine and clean according to work health and safety (WHS) guidelines
  • use control, monitoring and data entry systems
  • manipulate embellishment tools and operations
  • provide an example of printed material below acceptable standard.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

  • explain reel or sheet transportation and delivery systems
  • explain WHS requirements when loading and handling heavy reel sheets fanned before loading into the press
  • explain web tracking and importance to position and register
  • describe consequences of not splicing web correctly
  • list components to be adjusted to ensure correct delivery
  • explain effect of excessive suction on the slow-down wheels
  • identify frequency product quality should be assessed
  • explain causes of a halo effect on the relief print
  • identify signs of wear in the image area of the plate marking product deemed unacceptable by operator
  • identify monitoring systems
  • explain how to maintain ink levels
  • explain WHS concerns for in-line components of the press
  • discuss examination frequency of in-line components
  • list quality control and problem-solving techniques
  • describe precautions to ensure rewound product is of consistent, acceptable quality
  • identify quality assurance processes
  • describe appropriate actions if mild set-off was found on the back of the print
  • explain who to consult if there are problems with the print that cannot be fixed by the operator
  • show location of information concerning correct operation of the machine
  • describe shutdown and wash procedures to clean machinery and equipment
  • list dangers associated with solvents and solutions used to clean the inking system, plates, cylinders and press
  • identify procedures for correctly storing plates following printing
  • list parts of the machine to be thoroughly cleaned following the print run
  • identify components to be inspected for wear following the print run
  • explain important records to be kept for repeat prints
  • identify machine manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to this task, where are they kept and the information contained.

Assessment Conditions

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the printing field of work and include access to:

  • special purpose tools, and materials
  • platen, cylinder or rotary printing machines.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
