Replaces equivalent unit FPIWPP2202B Surface treat raw board, which was first released with FPI11 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 2.2.

This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to surface treat raw boards with chemical systems using spray boom equipment to temper wood panel products.

The unit applies to production workers who surface treat raw board in a forest and wood products factory setting.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare for treating

1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Select appropriate personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.

1.3 Obtain type and quantity of raw boards for surface treatment from storage.

1.4 Select suitable feed rates and chemical products for material being surface treated and plan process in line with work order.

2. Use equipment to surface treat raw boards

2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.

2.2 Apply surface treatment, monitor and adjust additive flow rates continually.

2.3 Check spray operations continually; clear blockages and filters while maintaining spray coverage.

2.4 Check boards regularly for surface quality and contamination; take corrective action where required.

2.5 Remove defective boards from treatment process and review for disposal or re-treatment.

2.6 Dry material and stack safely in designated location.

3. Shut down and clean equipment

3.1 Coordinate shutdown procedures with other line operators in line with organisational safety procedures.

3.2 Turn off pumps and flush equipment in line with manufacturer’s instructions.

3.3 Dispose of excess chemicals and flushing liquid in line with environmental protection practices.

3.4 Store equipment and chemicals in line with organisational procedures.

3.5 Record and report production outcomes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.

Foundation Skills

This section describes those core and employment skills that are essential to performance and are not explicit in the performance criteria.

Numeracy skills to:

  • identify quantities of required material within work orders and count numbers of raw boards

Oral communication skills to:

  • ask questions and actively listen to clarify contents of work orders.

Reading skills to:

  • interpret:
  • workplace health and safety and other organisational procedures
  • work orders
  • safety data sheets for surface treatment chemicals
  • manufacturers’ instructions.

Writing skills to:

  • complete accurate basic records for production outcomes and equipment faults.

Planning and organising skills to:

  • efficiently and logically sequence the stages of preparation and production using work order to guide activities.

Problem-solving skills to:

  • identify and dispose of defective boards or rectify
  • identify processing problems and faulty equipment and resolve by reporting or rectifying.

Technology skills to:

  • select and use appropriate personal protective equipment for treating boards with chemicals
  • efficiently and safely operate spray boom equipment.

Replaces equivalent unit FPIWPP2202B Surface treat raw board, which was first released with FPI11 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 2.2. This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Assessment requirements now specify the performance and knowledge evidence, as well as assessment conditions for this unit of competency. These sections simplify and replace components used in the previous unit format, including Required Skills and Knowledge, Evidence Guide and Range Statement

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.  If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

  • surface treat raw boards in line with individual work orders for each job; types of board to treat includes:
  • medium density fibreboard
  • core for laminated veneer
  • chipboard
  • fibreboard
  • plywood
  • at the completion of each of the above jobs:
  • shut-down and clean equipment in line with organisational safety procedures
  • dispose of excess chemicals in line with environmental protection practices
  • safely store unused chemicals
  • stack finished boards in storage location according to common size, thickness, length and surface treatment.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • environmental protection practices for surface treating raw boards:
  • reducing water and energy use
  • cleaning plant, tools and equipment
  • disposing of, recycling and reusing timber
  • disposing of hazardous substances
  • storage layout and categories for:
  • raw materials
  • stacking finished boards
  • characteristics of timber panels and the effects of chemical treatment including:
  • medium density fibreboard
  • core for laminated veneer
  • chipboard
  • fibreboard
  • plywood
  • properties, at a basic level of understanding, of chemicals used for surface treating raw boards and their purpose
  • methods used to safely store chemicals
  • typical work flow processes for surface treating raw boards
  • purpose, features, operation, shut down and cleaning of compressor driven spray boom equipment
  • range of appropriate chemical flow rates to avoid equipment blockages and optimise quality and quantity of production output
  • organisational procedures specific to surface treating raw boards:
  • workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out, use of personal protective equipment and handling hazardous substances
  • communication reporting lines
  • recording and reporting production outcomes and equipment faults.

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

  • compressor driven spray boom equipment
  • personal protective equipment suitable for surface treating raw boards
  • raw boards which includes one or more of the following:
  • medium density fibreboard
  • core for laminated veneer
  • chipboard
  • fibreboard
  • plywood
  • surface treatment chemicals
  • manufacturers’:
  • safety data sheets for surface treatment chemicals
  • instructions for equipment use
  • recommendations for cleaning equipment
  • work order with specific instructions for chemical treatment of timber panel products
  • template documents for recording production outcomes and equipment faults
  • relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information
  • organisational procedures for surface treating raw boards.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

  • hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
  • be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
  • be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
