Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to construct typical components for costumes worn in screen, media and entertainment industry productions. It involves the preparation, production and documentation of costume development techniques used for production.

The unit applies to those who integrate individualised sewing and construction techniques with a variety of other independent classic or standard techniques common to many costume designs. Emphasis in construction is on functionality, durability, wearer comfort and compliance with design specifications.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare to construct costume components

1.1 Identify costume components, functionality and requirements in consultation with required personnel

1.2 Confirm costume specifications and production schedule

1.3 Select construction techniques to design each costume

1.4 Plan sequence of operations for costume construction

1.5 Select and prepare machinery and equipment

2. Produce costume components

2.1 Follow planned sequence of construction operations and seek assistance from others as required

2.2 Follow work health and safety (WHS) procedures and manufacturer’s specifications during construction

2.3 Handle different combinations of fabrics during the construction process

2.4 Use a range of costume construction techniques to produce sample components that meet quality and functional requirements

2.5 Seek feedback on samples from required personnel and agree on modifications or improvements

2.6 Finish costume components within agreed timeframes

3. Document costume construction techniques

3.1 Compile work samples for future reference

3.2 Document techniques and methods used to construct samples

3.3 Produce a reference portfolio which includes completed components and notes on the sequence of operations

3.4 Reflect on process of constructing components and note areas for future improvement

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance but not explicit in the performance criteria.

Release 1

This version first released with CUA Creative Arts and Culture Training Package Version 5.0.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • construct at least two different costume components.

In the course of the above the candidate must:

  • determine the most efficient way to construct costume components to meet functional and production requirements
  • develop and follow a sequence of operations for constructing a variety of costume components
  • use a sewing machine competently and safely
  • sew and finish costume components that meet functional requirements and costume production deadlines
  • document the process of constructing costume components.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • sources of supply for materials typically required for construction of costume components
  • roles and responsibilities of personnel involved in costume design and construction
  • properties and characteristics of a range of fabrics used to construct costume components described in performance evidence
  • typical problems that arise in the context of constructing costume components and strategies to resolve them
  • typical costume components
  • functionality in relation to costumes for performance
  • safety procedures that apply to using equipment and machinery to make costume components.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a live production environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • notions, fabric and equipment used to produce costume components
  • productions for which costume components need to be constructed
  • costume specifications.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards. Where personal safety is a limiting factor, assessment may occur in a simulated work environment typical of those in a working environment in this industry.
