Application

This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to capture new spatial data to meet client specifications using a variety of data capture methodologies. It includes setting up and using specialist equipment and technologies to capture and manipulate spatial data including attributes, topological features and metadata and checking and validating the integrity and accuracy of results.

This unit is suitable for skilled surveying technicians and skilled spatial information system (SIS) technicians who use a broad range of cognitive, technical and communication skills to select and apply methods and technologies to analyse information and provide solutions to sometimes complex surveying/spatial information problems.

Surveying and spatial information skills are applied in a range of industry contexts, including town planning, civil construction, mining, engineering, health, agriculture and defence.  

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, in accordance with relevant state/territory regulations that govern surveying work, as well as work health and safety (WHS) legislation and regulations that apply to the workplace.

Cadastral surveying must be undertaken under the supervision of a registered surveyor. Users must check with the relevant regulatory state/territory authority before delivery.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Implement safe work practices when operating equipment and collecting data according to organisational requirements.

Gather spatial data.

Set up and operate equipment and technologies according to manufacturer specifications.

Collect data and attributes and relate data to a reference system according to project specifications.

Manage and manipulate spatial data, including attributes and topological structures, using relevant technologies.

Apply industry-accepted methods for assessing the validity and integrity of spatial data.

Identify, record and report discrepancies between specifications and collected data.

Document metadata according to industry-accepted standards and organisational requirements.

Performance Evidence

To demonstrate competency a candidate must meet the elements and performance criteria of this unit by capturing new spatial data that accurately and precisely collects and records spatial data that meets client specifications for two different projects. Each project must:

  • use two of the following pieces of equipment:
  • data logger or other mobile computing device
  • global navigation satellite system (GNSS)
  • laser scanner
  • digital level
  • sonar
  • total station
  • unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)
  • use two of the following data capture methodologies:
  • conversion or translation from existing information, including hard copy or digital
  • data logging, including GNSS
  • photogrammetry
  • remote sensing
  • laser scanning
  • sonar
  • tacheometry.

Knowledge Evidence

To be competent in this unit a candidate must demonstrate knowledge of:

  • purpose and uses of data capture technologies and equipment
  • methods for validating the integrity of spatial data
  • methods for manipulating spatial data using software
  • legislative requirements for accessing and storing spatial data, including data privacy, copyright and licensing.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must satisfy the requirements for assessors contained in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting where these skills and knowledge would be performed.

Candidates must have access to:

  • computer with software appropriate for spatial data management
  • organisational procedures relating to data privacy, copyright and licensing.
