Release 1. This is the first release of this unit of competency in the UEG Gas Industry Training Package.

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to fault find and repair data logging equipment.

It includes preparing to find and repair faults, completing and reporting on repair activities.

This unit applies to any work site where meters and data loggers are installed, and subject to all work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) and duty of care requirements being met for the workplace.

The application of the skills and knowledge described in this unit may require a licence/registration to practise in the workplace.

Other conditions may apply under state and territory legislative and regulatory licensing requirements which must be confirmed prior to commencing this unit.

Prepare to find and repair faults 

1.1 

Work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements and workplace procedures for relevant work area are identified, obtained and applied

Find and repair faults 

2.1 

WHS/OHS risk control measures, schedule of work and workplace procedures for carrying out work are followed

Stray current testing and protection is undertaken in accordance with industry standards, regulations and workplace procedures

2.3 

Data logging equipment is checked and isolated, if required, in accordance with WHS/OHS requirements and workplace procedures

2.4 

Fault finding and repairs are undertaken correctly and safely in accordance with manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures

2.5 

Data logging components are disconnected, de-energised, serviced, replaced and recommissioned, as necessary, and parts returned as required

2.6 

The repair is tested in accordance with workplace procedures

2.7 

Unplanned events are dealt with in consultation with relevant person/s and in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturer instructions

Complete and report repair activities 

3.1 

WHS/OHS work completion risk control measures and workplace procedures are followed

3.2 

Final checks are performed to ensure quality of work complies with manufacturer instructions, industry standards and regulations

3.3 

Equipment, tools and any surplus resources and materials are cleaned, checked and stored securely or disposed of in accordance with workplace procedures

3.4 

Work area is tidied and made safe in accordance with job instructions and workplace procedures

3.5 

Work completion reporting is conducted and relevant person/s notified in accordance with workplace procedures

3.6 

Malicious and/or third-party damage is reported in accordance with workplace procedures

Range is restricted to essential operating conditions and any other variables essential to the work environment.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two separate occasions and include:

• applying methodical fault-finding techniques
• applying relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements, including:

• hazard identification and reporting
• implementing risk control measures
• recognising hazard warnings and safety signs
• selecting and using relevant personal protective equipment (PPE)

• communicating effectively with relevant personnel and customers
• completing work and relevant documentation
• coordinating work with relevant person/s
• dealing with unplanned events/situations in accordance with workplace procedures in a manner that minimises risk to personnel and equipment
• finding and repairing faults to components without damage, including:

• de-energising
• disconnecting
• recommissioning
• replacing
• servicing

• following manufacturer instructions
• following work schedule, safety plan and job requirements
• following workplace policies and procedures
• jointing and terminating wiring for data logging equipment safely and correctly according to manufacturers’ instructions and industry standards
• maintaining a clean and safe work site
• performing quality, safety and final checks
• performing stray current testing and protection
• referring issues
• using materials, tools, equipment and testing devices
• using relevant communication devices, including smartphones and laptops.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements, performance criteria and range of conditions and include knowledge of:

• communication skills to liaise with internal and external person/s
• customer metering systems and components, including:

• circuit boards
• componentry and connections
• diagnostic processes
• meters
• version updates/upgrades

• quality, safety and final checks
• relevant legislation, industry standards, guidelines, codes of practice and regulations
• relevant manufacturer instructions
• relevant permits required
• relevant safe work method statements (SWMS)/job safety assessments or risk mitigation processes
• relevant tools, equipment and devices, including:

• cable tracers
• multimeters
• smartphones and laptops
• testing equipment
• wire jointing equipment

• relevant WHS/OHS policies and procedures, including:

• environmental and safety hazards
• hazard identification
• hazard warnings and safety signs
• relevant PPE
• risk assessment and control measures
• safety requirements for entering domestic and commercial customer sites

• relevant WHS/OHS legislated requirements
• relevant workplace documentation, forms, reports and manuals, including paper based and electronic types

Assessors must hold credentials specified within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must satisfy the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence and all regulatory requirements included within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in suitable workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in suitable simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment must include access to:

• a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or simulations
• relevant and appropriate materials, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) currently used in industry
• applicable documentation, including workplace procedures, equipment specifications, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals.
