Release 1 . This is the first release of this unit of competency in the TLI Transport and Logistics Training Package.

Application

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to identify and rectify minor faults on rail traffic in accordance with workplace requirements.

This includes identifying repair requirements, conducting minor repairs, checking and reporting minor repairs.

Work must be carried out in accordance with workplace procedures and regulations, and safe working codes of practice relevant to fault diagnosis and rectification.

Work involves the application of routine minor fault diagnosis and rectification workplace procedures when maintaining the safety and operation of rail traffic across a variety of operational rail transport contexts.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

  • carrying out checks on rail traffic
  • carrying out minor repairs in accordance with workplace procedures
  • communicating effectively with others
  • identifying job hazards and required actions to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards
  • identifying faults and defects and appropriate actions in accordance with workplace procedures
  • modifying activities depending on operational contingencies, risk situations and environments
  • operating and adapting to differences in equipment in accordance with safe operating and workplace procedures
  • operating equipment in accordance with workplace procedures
  • reading and interpreting relevant instructions, procedures, information and signs
  • working systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods or equipment.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

  • communications protocols
  • equipment and the procedures and precautions for their use
  • isolation systems
  • minor repair of faults that can occur, and related actions that should be taken
  • operational requirement of rail traffic
  • possible faults and defects and appropriate actions
  • relevant rail network standards and workplace procedures and policies
  • relevant rail safety, work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) and environmental procedures and regulations
  • workplace documentation and record requirements.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must hold credentials specified within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must satisfy the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence and all regulatory requirements included within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment must include access to:

  • a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or simulations
  • relevant and appropriate materials, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) currently used in industry
  • applicable documentation including workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals.
