PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

1. Participate in a pre-tournament analysis and preparation session.

1.1 Demonstrate techniques and strategies commonly used within golf at high performance level to prepare psychologically for competition.

1.2 Analyse own strengths and weaknesses  and identify counter strategies for tournament play.

1.3 Develop tactical plans  for specific tournaments.

1.4 Identify the specific responsibilities and roles of the coach and support staff , including caddies in training, preparation and tournament situations.

2. Implement agreed strategies and game plans, and make decisions during tournaments.

2.1 Apply agreed strategies to counter weaknesses in tournament play.

2.2 Assess effectiveness of strategies following each round

2.3 Modify tournament strategy and make relevant adjustments in subsequent rounds.

2.4 Identify weather and other environmental conditions and make relevant adjustments to tactics and strategies.

3. Participate in a post-tournament analysis and follow up.

3.1 Gather statistical data and information from the tournament for analysis and review.

3.2 Participate in post-tournament review and statistical analysis, highlighting pre and in-match performance, and suggest relevant adjustments for subsequent matches.

3.3 Record statistics  to assist with long-term monitoring and enhancement of future performance.

Overview of assessment

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Evidence of the ability to:

  • undertake competitive play to a pre-determined standard utilising the PGA of Australia adjusted average system during high performance tournaments
  • execute tactics and strategies to a high performance level in competitions and tournaments
  • implement tactical plans in competitions and tournaments
  • psychologically prepare for competitions and tournaments
  • develop future strategies for identified areas of concern following appraisal of competition or tournament statistics
  • comply with tournament or competition rules and regulations.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure:

  • performance over a minimum of 20 x 18-hole rounds covering all categories of professional tournament play.

Assessment must also ensure access to:

  • professional golf tournaments and high performance competition facilities
  • a coach with a minimum National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) Level III accreditation or PGA mentor to instruct athletes
  • suitably qualified golfing officials and support staff
  • technological aids and equipment
  • resources and information outlining the tactics and strategies of golf in a high performance context
  • tournament or competition rules and regulations of golf, and current legislation and organisational policies and procedures that impact on the application of skills, tactics and strategies in high performance competitions
  • examples of tactical plans for tournament play.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

  • observation of application of tactical plans to tournament play
  • oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of relevant strategies for specific tournament conditions
  • third party reports from coaches and other support personnel detailing application of tactics and strategies in tournament play
  • playing statements, tournament results and statistical reports.
