Application

This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to maintain underground stockpiles in Metalliferous mining.

This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

Unit Sector

Metalliferous mining (Underground)

Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for underground stockpiling

1.1. Access, interpret and apply stockpile maintenance documentation, and ensure the work activity is compliant

1.2. Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work instructions

1.3. Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities

1.4. Inspect and assess site conditions and determine if scaling is required and take action

1.5. Identify, address and report potential risks, hazards and environmental issues

1.6. Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency

1.7. Use approved dust suppression and extraction methods

1.8. Ensure work area is well ventilated before

2. Stockpile materials

2.1. Ensure stockpile site has adequate ground support and is accessible

2.2. Place stockpile materials in correct location to ensure efficient identification and access, and to prevent mixing of materials

2.3. Drive and operate equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions and avoiding damage to the stockpile and surrounding site

2.4. Use appropriate stockpiling techniques to maximise the capacity of the stockpiling site

2.5. Identify and remove contaminants

3. Carry out post operational procedures

3.1. Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues

3.2. Clean and store auxiliary service equipment

3.3. Complete housekeeping requirements

3.4. Process written and verbal recording and reporting requirements

Foundation Skills

Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit. Further information is available in the Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package Companion Volume.

  • using appropriate stockpiling techniques
  • using approved dust suppression and extraction methods
  • works effectively with others to undertake and complete the maintenance of underground stockpiles that meets all of the required outcomes including:
  • communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions, and convey work progress
  • demonstrates consistent timely completion of underground stockpile maintenance that safely, effectively and efficiently meet all of the required outcomes on a minimum of three (3) separate occasions including:
  • completing equipment start-up, parking and shut-down procedures
  • assessing stockpile site ground support and accessibility
  • placing stockpile materials in correct location to prevent mixing of materials
  • driving and operating equipment to manufacturer’s instructions
  • identifying and applying appropriate stockpiling techniques to maximise the capacity of the stockpiling site
  • identifying and removing contaminants

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in maintaining underground stockpiles through:
