This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to prepare and perform manual scaling operations in Metalliferous mining.
This unit is appropriate for those working operational roles.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for manual scaling
|
1.1. Access, interpret and apply manual scaling operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
1.2. Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work instructions
1.3. Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
1.4. Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
1.5. Select, and check for faults, equipment/tools for the activity
1.6. Identify, address and report environmental issues, potential risks and hazards
1.7. Communicate with other equipment operators and personnel using approved communication methods
1.8. Use approved dust suppression and extraction equipment/methods
1.9. Establish exclusion zone to prevent unauthorised access
1.10. Ensure work area is ventilated before entry

2. Perform manual scaling operations
|
2.1. Inspect and assess site conditions and determine scaling requirements and starting point
2.2. Inspect and determine appropriateness of conducting manual scaling
2.3. Establish and maintain a suitable working posture for manual scaling
2.4. Ensure maintenance of safe egress
2.5. Conduct manual scaling correctly
2.6. Maintain services
2.7. Maintain dust controls as manual scaling operations advance

3. Conduct housekeeping activities

3.1. Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
3.2. Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
3.3. Manage and/or report hazards, and maintain a safe working environment
3.4. Process and maintain written records

Performance Evidence
Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:
- locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures
- implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of manual scaling preparation and performance including:
- using inspection techniques
- using appropriate dust suppression and extraction methods
- works effectively with others to undertake and complete the preparation and performance of manual scaling that meets all of the required outcomes including:
- communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions, and convey work progress
- demonstrates consistent timely completion of manual scaling operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meet all of the required outcomes on a minimum of three (3) separate occasions including:
- conducting inspections on:
- applying exclusion zone control measures
- identifying and using required ancillary equipment
- applying dust suppression and extraction
- conducting manual scaling
- conducting housekeeping activities
- maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures
Knowledge Evidence
The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in preparing and perform manual scaling operations through:
- risk assessment and hazard management
- site conditions including:
- geological and technical data
- environmental issues
- ground control
- ventilation and dust controls
- equipment safety requirements
- work area inspections
- dealing with misfires
- being prepared for fire/accident/emergency
Assessment Conditions
- An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing; and,
- this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
- this unit must be assessed using Resources and Infrastructure Industry sector specific policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals; and,
- an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through five (5) years of current and continuous work with the Industry sector and must hold the TAE Assessor Skill Set or equivalent.
