This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to conduct operations with skid steer loaders using attachments in Coal and Metalliferous mining and Extractive.

Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for skid steer loader operations

1.1 Access, interpret and apply skid steer loader operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant

1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements

1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures

1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities

1.5 Obtain, identify and implement traffic signage requirements

1.6 Select plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks that are consistent with the requirements of the job, check them for serviceability and rectify or report any faults

1.7 Select, and check for faults, equipment and/or attachments for work activities

1.8 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency

2. Operate skid steer loader

2.1 Carry out pre-start, start-up, park, shutdown and secure equipment procedures

2.2 Coordinate activities with others at the site prior to commencement of, and during, the work activity

2.3 Continually monitor hazards and risks , and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment

2.4 Drive and operate loader, and modify the operating technique to meet changing work conditions

2.5 Complete work plan within the operating capacity of the equipment

2.6 Act on or report monitoring systems and alarms

3. Load, carry and place materials

3.1 Conduct communication practices associated with transportation and loading of materials

3.2 Establish weight of load and ensure it is within safe operational limits of the machine

3.3 Position machinery to ensure stability and effectively shift materials

3.4 Shift load safely and effectively

3.5 Move load using hand/audible/communication signals

4. Select, remove and fit attachments

4.1 Select attachment for the task

4.2 Remove and fit attachment appropriately

4.3 Test attachment and ensure correct fitting and operation

4.4 Use attachment ensuring design limitations are maintained

4.5 Clean and store removed attachments in designated location

5. Relocate the skid steer loader

5.1 Prepare skid steer loader for relocation

5.2 Move skid steer loader safely between worksites, observing relevant codes and traffic management requirements

5.3 Load and unload machine from float/trailer

6. Carry out machine operator maintenance

6.1 Prepare machine for maintenance

6.2 Conduct inspection and fault finding

6.3 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks

6.4 Return machine to service

6.5 Process written maintenance records

7. Conduct housekeeping activities

7.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials

7.2 Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues

7.3 Manage and/or report hazards, and maintain a safe working environment

7.4 Process written records and reports

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

  • locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures
  • implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of skid steer loader operations with attachments including:
  • identifying the components and specific actions of a skid steer
  • identifying skid steer loader tasks
  • conducting prestart checks prior to commencing operations and shutdown procedures on completion of operations
  • carrying out vehicle refuelling requirements and procedures
  • applying safe work practices and identifying and reporting all potential hazards, risks and environmental issues
  • selecting and using the required tools, equipment and attachments
  • working safely around other machines and personnel
  • demonstrates consistent timely completion of skid steer loader operations with attachments that safely, effectively and efficiently meet the required outcomes on a minimum of three (3) separate occasions including:
  • driving, manoeuvring and operating skid steer loader smoothly, adjusting operations for the work environment conditions
  • performing skid steer loading tasks which must include a minimum of one (1) of the following:
  • stripping/spreading topsoil and materials
  • backfilling
  • loading vehicles
  • excavations
  • mixing materials
  • site clean up
  • compacting
  • truck excavation
  • lifting and carrying materials
  • cutting batters and benches
  • rock breaking and any activities associated with attachments listed below
  • using communication systems to confirm activity, correct path and process to safely move and transport load
  • positioning skid steer loader ensuring stability in operations
  • loading materials
  • shifting and placing materials
  • selecting, fitting, testing, using and removing a minimum of one (1) of the following attachments:
  • multipurpose bucket
  • forks
  • dozer blade
  • backhoe
  • auger
  • chain digger
  • power broom
  • profiler
  • tiller/mixer
  • rotary hoe
  • hammer
  • asphalt cutter/saw
  • concrete cutter/saw
  • rake
  • loading and unloading skid steer loader from float/trailer
  • park up, shut down and prepare machine for maintenance

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge conducting operations with skid steer loaders using attachments through:

  • accessing, interpreting and applying the organisation and site requirements and procedures for:
  • driving and operating equipment
  • materials handling using safety data sheets
  • environmental protection
  • ground conditions,
  • isolation procedures
  • equipment processes, technical capability and limitations
  • fire/accident/emergency
  • signs of operator fatigue and how it should be managed identifying
  • site isolation and traffic control responsibilities and authorities
  • project quality requirements
  • calculating safe working loads
  • operational, maintenance and basic diagnostics
  • housekeeping activities

Assessment Conditions

  • An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing: and,
  • this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
  • this unit must be assessed using Resources and Infrastructure Industry sector specific policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals; and,
  • assessor requirements differ between sectors as follows:
  • when assessing this unit in the context of the Metalliferous Mining sector:
  • an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through five (5) years of current and continuous work with the Industry sector and must hold the TAE Assessor Skill Set or equivalent; or,
  • when assessing this unit in the context of the Coal Mining sector:
  • an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through twelve (12) month work experience in an Industry relevant to the skills being assessed within the last three (3) years; and,
  • where the assessor does not have current experience a co-assessment or partnership arrangement needs to exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry technical expert/ subject matter expert. The Industry technical expert/subject matter expert must demonstrate competency in the unit being assessed, and be currently working in the sector with a minimum of twelve (12) months’ work experience within the last three (3) years; or,
  • when assessing this unit in the context of the Extractive sector
  • an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through five (5) years’ work experience in the Industry sector; and,
  • where the assessor does not have current experience a co-assessment or partnership arrangement needs to exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry technical expert/ subject matter expert. The Industry technical expert/subject matter expert must hold the unit being assessed and be currently working in the sector with a minimum of two (2) years’ of current work experience.
