Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for underground load, haul and dump operations

1.1 Access, interpret and apply underground load, haul and dump operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant

1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements

1.3 Identify and address risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures

1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities

1.5 Select, and check for faults, equipment and/or attachments for work activities

1.6 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency

1.7 Inspect and assess site conditions to determine if scaling is required and take action according to site requirements

1.8 Use approved dust suppression and extraction methods

1.9 Ensure work area is well ventilated before entry

1.10Identify need for, and apply signage and barricades during each stage of activities

2. Operate load, haul, dump plant

2.1 Carry out start-up, park, shutdown and secure equipment procedures

2.2 Coordinate activities with others at the site prior to commencement of, and during, the work activity

2.3 Drive and operate equipment safely within working environment, load limitations and road conditions

2.4 Monitor and manage equipment performance using appropriate indicators and ensure efficiency of operations

2.5 Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment

2.6 Complete the work plan, within the operating capacities of the plant

3. Load material

3.1 Wash down surrounding area and wet material to suppress dust

3.2 Scale down loose material

3.3 Check job site and identify and manages possible misfires in accordance with site procedures

3.4 Check, identify and remove contaminants

3.5 Ensure all hoses and other auxiliary services are neatly stored

3.6 Bog to work plan removing required materials

3.7 Ensure road is kept clear during bogging

4. Haul material

4.1 Confirm type of material and haul to designated location

4.2 Lower bucket in recommended position

4.3 Identify and manage spillages on hauling surface

4.4 Maintain hauling efficiency by managing working environment conditions

5. Dump materials

5.1 Slow equipment to crawl when approaching dump site

5.2 Lift bucket to appropriate height in readiness for dumping, maintaining stability of loader

5.3 Dump material evenly distributing load or as required

6. Clean up job site

6.1 Scale down site ensuring loose materials are dislodged safely

6.2 Leave site and surrounding area clear, safe and accessible

7. Carry out operator maintenance

7.1 Prepare machine for maintenance

7.2 Conduct inspection and fault finding

7.3 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks

7.4 Process written maintenance records

8. Carry out housekeeping activities

8.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials

8.2 Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

  • locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures
  • implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient conducting of load, haul, dump operations in underground metalliferous mines including:
  • conducting prestart checks prior to commencing operations and shutdown procedures on completion of operations
  • carrying out vehicle refuelling requirements and procedures
  • driving and operating the equipment to site conditions
  • applying safe work practices and identifying and reporting all potential hazards, risks and environmental issues
  • applying problem solving and troubleshooting techniques
  • selecting and using the required tools and equipment
  • carrying out equipment towing
  • applying vehicle directing procedures
  • applying pushing techniques
  • Works effectively with others to undertake and complete load, haul, dump operations in underground metalliferous mines that meet all of the required outcomes including:
  • using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others
  • maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures
  • organising work activities to meet all task requirements
  • communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions
  • demonstrates consistent timely completion of load, haul, dump operations in underground metalliferous mines that safely, effectively and efficiently meets the required outcomes on a minimum of three (3) separate occasionsand dump operations operations including:
  • completion of operations to work plan including:
  • loading material
  • hauling material
  • dumping material
  • scaling down lose material
  • identifying and managing misfires
  • identifying and removing contaminants
  • identifying and managing spillages

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of conducting underground load, haul and dump operations through:

  • communicating and performing isolation procedures
  • identifying primary and secondary ventilation
  • identifying equipment processes, technical capability and limitations
  • identifying, interpreting and using geological and technical data (basic)
  • being prepared for fire/accident/emergency
  • identifying signs of operator fatigue and how it should be managed
  • applying operational, maintenance and basic diagnostics
  • completing housekeeping activities

Assessment Conditions

  • An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing; and,
  • this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
  • this unit must be assessed using Resources and Infrastructure Industry sector specific policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals; and,
  • an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through five (5) years of current and continuous work with the Industry sector and must hold the TAE Assessor Skill Set or equivalent.
