Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for bucket-wheel operations
|
1.1 Access, interpret and apply bucket-wheel operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
1.3 Identify and address risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
1.5 Access, interpret and apply geological and survey data required to complete the allocated work
1.6 Select, and check for faults, equipment and/or attachments for work activities
1.7 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency

2. Operate bucket-wheel excavator
|
2.1 Coordinate activities with others at the site prior to commencement of, and during, the work activity
2.2 Carry out pre-start, start-up, park-up, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
2.3 Drive and operate bucket-wheel, using controls to remove and place burden
2.4 Steer, travel and maintain alignment, and optimise digging performance
2.5 Act on monitoring systems and alarms or report problems
2.6 Continually monitor hazards and risks , and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
2.7 Complete work plan within the operating capacity of the equipment

3. Relocate bucket-wheel excavator

3.1 Receive and confirm route and location plan and by site inspection
3.2 Complete ground preparation
3.3 Carry out cable location and handling
3.4 Resolve coordination issues, including support equipment and personnel
3.5 Conduct steering and travel to relocate bucket wheel excavator

4. Carry out operator maintenance
|
4.1 Prepare machine for maintenance
4.2 Conduct inspection and fault finding
4.3 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks
4.4 Return the machine to service

5. Conduct housekeeping activities

5.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials

Performance Evidence
Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:
- locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures
- implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of bucket-wheel operations including:
- conducting prestart checks prior to commencing operations and shutdown procedures on completion of operations
- carrying out vehicle refuelling requirements and procedures
- driving and operating the equipment to site conditions
- applying safe work practices and identifying and reporting all potential hazards, risks and environmental issues
- applying problem solving and troubleshooting techniques
- selecting and using the required tools and equipment
- safely parking and securing of equipment
- works effectively with others to undertake and complete bucket-wheel operations that meet all of the required outcomes including:
- using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others
- maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures
- communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions
- demonstrates consistent timely completion of bucket-wheel operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meet the required outcomes on a minimum of three (3) separate occasions including:
- completion of operations to work plan including:
- the positioning and digging of burden as part of a terrace dig
- rehandling and responding to changes in depth, grade and crossfall
- relocating bucket-wheel excavator
- identify and respond to alarms and signals
- drive and operate bucket-wheel
- steer, travel and maintain alignment of bucket-wheel
Knowledge Evidence
The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of conducting bucket-wheel operations through:
- identifying, interpreting ground conditions
- communicating and performing isolation procedures
- identifying equipment characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations
- being prepared for fire/accident/emergency
- identifying signs of operator fatigue and how it should be managed identifying
- complying with project quality requirements
- applying operational, maintenance and basic diagnostics
- completing housekeeping activities
- applying site environmental requirements and constraints
- reading and interpreting site geological and survey data
Assessment Conditions
- An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing; and,
- this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
- this unit must be assessed using Resources and Infrastructure Industry sector specific policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals; and,
- an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through twelve (12) month work experience in an Industry relevant to the skills being assessed within the last three (3) years; and,
- where the assessor does not have current experience a co-assessment or partnership arrangement needs to exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry technical expert/ subject matter expert. The Industry technical expert/subject matter expert must demonstrate competency in the unit being assessed, and be currently working in the sector with a minimum of twelve (12) months’ work experience within the last three (3) years.
