1. Plan and prepare to insert tie bars in fresh concrete
|
1.1 Access, interpret and apply insert tie bars documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
1.4 Select and wear correct personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
1.5 Identify, obtain and implement signage requirements
1.6 Select and check for faults to plant, tools and equipment, to carry out tasks

2. Setup operations
|
2.1 Verify quantity of bars required for the task
2.2 Inspect and confirm bars are fit for purpose
2.3 Inspect and confirm saw cut locations are marked out or programmed into paving computer as per site specifications
2.4 Check automatic program spacing
2.5 Check tie bar spacing and variations conform to plans
2.6 Check for safe operations and confirm operation of emergency stops

3. Operate tie bar system
|
3.1 Maintain safe working area around tie bar inserter
3.2 Maintain adequate stock of bars at tie bar inserter
3.3 Operate and monitor mechanical or manual tie bar insertion for correct location, alignment and depth (if sidebars)
3.4 Report missed bars or jamming immediately
3.5 Ensure location of any missed or noncompliant insertion is recorded
3.6 Ensure concrete is fully compacted around the tie bar
3.7 Ensure magazine is sufficiently loaded at all times
3.8 Operate hiab (if fitted) to load magazine safely and accurately
3.9 Load magazine by hand according to correct procedures
3.10 Monitor movements and hazards and identify and communicate changes to the work environment during the work process

4.1 Clear work area and dispose of, reuse or recycle materials
4.2 Clean, check, maintain and store machinery, tools and equipment Return unused stock bars to store

Performance Evidence
Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:
- locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures
- implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient insertion of tie bars into fresh concrete including:
- accessing, interpreting and applying documentation for inserting tie bars into fresh concrete
- identifying and applying relevant specifications to all work activities
- identifying, addressing and reporting potential hazards and risks
- identifying, obtaining, confirming and implementing signage and barrier requirements
- selecting and checking for faults all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
- identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues
- works effectively with others to undertake the insertion of tie bars into fresh concrete that meets all of the required outcomes including:
- preparing for and organising work activities to meet all task requirements
- communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions
- using a range of communication techniques and aids to advise others of work activity
- monitoring movements and hazards and identifying and communicating changes to the work environment during the work process
- demonstrates consistent, timely insertion of tie bars into fresh concrete that safely, effectively and efficiently meet all of the required outcomes on a minimum of three (3) separate occasions including:
- setting up for safe operations
- operating tie bar system to specifications
- clearing work area and disposing of, recycling or storing materials
- cleaning, checking, maintaining and storing plant, tools and equipment
- identify and correctly mark onsite changes in tie bar spacing from the plans
- Conduct insertion and compaction of tie bars to correct depth over seventy-five (75) linear metres on a minimum of three (3) occasions
- load a magazine on at least one occasion in accordance with manufacturer’s procedures
- set out manually inserted tie bars and corresponding saw cuts
Knowledge Evidence
The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in inserting tie bars in fresh concrete through:
- accessing, interpreting and applying the organisation and site requirements and procedures for conducting road construction paver screeding operations for:
- identifying and managing risks
- identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues
- setting up work activity
- site isolation, signage and erecting barriers
- work health and safety
- managing waste
- tools and equipment operations and capabilities
- selecting and checking for faults, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
- carrying out work to specifications
- applying effective techniques for inserting tie bars into fresh concrete
Assessment Conditions
- An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing; and,
- this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
- this unit must be assessed using Resources and Infrastructure Industry sector specific policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals; and,
- an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through five (5) years’ work experience in the Industry sector; and,
- where the assessor does not have current experience a co-assessment or partnership arrangement needs to exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry technical expert/ subject matter expert. The Industry technical expert/subject matter expert must hold the unit being assessed and be currently working in the sector with a minimum of two (2) years’ of current work experience
