Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to finish concrete pavements

1.1 Access, interpret and apply concrete pavement finishing documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant

1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements

1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures

1.4 Select and wear correct personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities

1.5 Identify, address and report potential hazards and risks and implement control measures

1.6 Identify, obtain, confirm and implement signage requirements

1.7 Select and check for faults to plant, tools and equipment

1.8 Identify, address and report environmental issues and ground conditions

2. Finish concrete

2.1 Apply float and trowel after initial screeding to assist in maintaining a level surface and to remove screeding inaccuracies

2.2 Apply mechanical trowelling to consolidate and densify the setting concrete surface

2.3 Install control joints, edges finished and concrete trowelled to specifications

2.4 Apply texture according to client requirements

2.5 Apply final trowel finish to concrete surface to specifications

2.6 Monitor movements and hazards and identify and communicate changes to the work environment during the work process

3. Clean up

3.1 Clear work area and dispose of, reuse or recycle material

3.2 Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and standard work practices

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

  • locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures
  • implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient finishing of pavements including:
  • accessing, interpreting and applying documentation for finishing concrete pavements
  • identifying and applying relevant specifications to all work activities
  • identifying, addressing and reporting potential hazards and risks
  • identifying, obtaining, confirming and implementing signage requirements
  • selecting and checking for faults to plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
  • identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues
  • works effectively with others to undertake the finishing of concrete that meets all of the required outcomes including:
  • preparing for and organising work activities to meet all task requirements
  • communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions
  • using a range of communication techniques and aids to advise others of work activity and exclusion zones
  • monitoring movements and hazards and identifying and communicating changes to the work environment during the work process
  • demonstrates consistent, timely finishing of concrete that safely, effectively and efficiently meet all of the required outcomes on a minimum of three (3) separate occasions including:
  • finishing concrete to specifications
  • clearing work area and disposing of, recycling or storing materials
  • cleaning, checking, maintaining and storing plant, tools and equipment
  • conduct finishing of concrete on:
  • four x ten (4x10) metre slab or equivalent
  • demonstrate the use of:
  • wood float
  • vibration screed
  • power screed
  • steel trowel
  • edging tool
  • demonstrate the removal of form work over ten (10) metres

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in finishing concrete pavements through:

  • accessing, interpreting and applying the organisation and site requirements and procedures for:
  • identifying and managing risks
  • identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues
  • setting up work activity
  • site isolation, signage, erecting barriers and traffic control
  • work health and safety
  • managing waste
  • selecting and checking for faults, all tools and equipment to carry out tasks
  • carrying out work to specifications
  • applying effective techniques finishing concrete

Assessment Conditions

  • An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing; and,
  • this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
  • this unit must be assessed using Resources and Infrastructure Industry sector specific policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals; and,
  • an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through five (5) years’ work experience in the Industry sector; and,
  • where the assessor does not have current experience a co-assessment or partnership arrangement needs to exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry technical expert/ subject matter expert. The Industry technical expert/subject matter expert must hold the unit being assessed and be currently working in the sector with a minimum of two (2) years’ of current work experience
