Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare

1.1 Access, interpret and apply paver operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant

1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements

1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures

1.4 Select and wear correct personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities

1.5 Identify, obtain, confirm and implement signage requirements

1.6 Select and check for faults all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks

2. Conduct paver pre-operational checks

2.1 Carry out pre-start, start-up, park and shutdown procedures

2.2 Check paver controls and functions for serviceability, focusing on brakes, implements or other attachments and manoeuvrability

2.3 Rectify or report any faults identified

3. Operate paver

3.1 Identify operating techniques for paver to achieve optimum output in accordance with manufacturer’s design specifications while achieving specified tolerances

3.2 Operate paver to work instructions

4. Relocate paver

4.1 Drive paver safely on highways and construction sites

4.2 Prepare paver for relocation

5. Carry out operator maintenance

5.1 Conduct inspection and fault finding in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications and/or organisational requirements

5.2 Carry out routine operational servicing and lubrication tasks

5.3 Carry out minor maintenance

5.4 Record in writing performance of machine to enable timely repair of equipment

6. Clean up

6.1 Clear work area and recycle or dispose of materials

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

  • locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures
  • implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of paver operations including:
  • accessing, interpreting and applying documentation relevant to conducting paver operations
  • identifying and applying relevant specifications to all work activities
  • identifying, addressing and reporting potential hazards and risks
  • identifying, obtaining, confirming and implementing signage requirements
  • selecting and checking for faults all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
  • identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues and ground conditions
  • works effectively with others to undertake and complete the paver operations in a way that meets all of the required outcomes including:
  • preparing for and organising work activities to meet all task requirements
  • communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions
  • using a range of communication techniques and aids to advise others of work activity and exclusion zones
  • monitoring movements and hazards and identifying and communicating changes to the work environment during the work process
  • demonstrates consistent, timely completion of paver operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meet all of the required outcomes on a minimum of three (3) separate occasions including:
  • conducting paver pre-operational checks and rectifying or reporting any faults
  • operating paver to work instructions to manufacturer’s design specifications and in accordance with company operating procedures
  • relocating paver correctly and safely
  • carrying out operator maintenance and keeping required records
  • clearing work area and disposing of, recycling or storing materials
  • cleaning, checking, maintaining and storing plant, tools and equipment
  • laying a minimum of five (5) sections of straight paving (at least one (1) of one hundred (100) metres) plus three intersections are to be placed

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in conducting paver operations through:

  • accessing, interpreting and applying organisation and site requirements and procedures for:
  • identifying and managing risks
  • identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues
  • setting up work activity
  • site isolation, signage, erecting barriers and traffic control
  • work health and safety
  • managing waste
  • selecting and checking for faults, all tools and equipment to carry out tasks
  • carrying out work to specifications
  • manufacturer’s design specifications
  • applying effective techniques for concrete paver operations

Assessment Conditions

  • An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing; and,
  • this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
  • this unit must be assessed using Resources and Infrastructure Industry sector specific policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals; and,
  • an assessor must demonstrate the skills and knowledge of this unit through five (5) years’ work experience in the Industry sector; and,
  • where the assessor does not have current experience a co-assessment or partnership arrangement needs to exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry technical expert/ subject matter expert. The Industry technical expert/subject matter expert must hold the unit being assessed and be currently working in the sector with a minimum of two (2) years’ of current work experience
