Unit Descriptor 

This unit covers the competency required to prepare explosive ordnance for proof tests.

The preparation of explosive ordnance for proof testing is a normal component of this testing. The preparation includes a range of alterations and modifications required to meet the proof testing process.

Application of the Unit 

This unit was developed for specialists working within proof and trials organisations within Defence but may be applicable to any individual in this field of work.

Typically these individuals must demonstrate the ability to work independently or as part of a team under direct and/or indirect supervision, use discretion and judgement, and take responsibility for the quality of their output. All activities are carried out in accordance with relevant organisational policies and procedures.

1. Identify the trial and proof test explosive ordnance requirements 

1.1 Proof or trial instructions  are read and clarified where necessary, in accordance with standard procedures

1.2 Occupational health and safety (OH&S) requirements and recognised safety precautions including organisational procedures, are identified and applied throughout the task

1.3 Required stores and equipment are identified, resourced and checked for calibration, serviceability and safety

1.4 Liaison with relevant parties  is conducted

2. Conduct the preparation activities 

2.1 Environmental requirements  are adhered to

2.2 Explosive ordnance is prepared  in accordance with proof or trial requirements, and organisational procedures and authorities

2.3 Records are maintained throughout the process to ensure traceability of preparation activities

3. Recondition the preparation area 

3.1 Excess explosive ordnance is returned to store or disposed of in accordance with the trial/proof instruction and organisational procedures

3.2 Area is made safe in accordance with organisational procedures

3.3 Documentation and reports are finalised in accordance with trial/proof instructions and organisational procedures

Competency should be assessed in the workplace or in a simulated work environment, in accordance with all relevant legislation and organisational requirements.

Method of assessment 

This unit may be assessed with the following unit:

In a public safety environment assessment is usually conducted via direct observation in a training environment or in the workplace via subject matter supervision and/or mentoring, which is typically recorded in a competency workbook.

Assessment is completed using appropriately qualified assessors who select the most appropriate method of assessment.

Assessment may occur in an operational environment or in an industry-approved simulated work environment. Forms of assessment that are typically used include:

• direct observation
• interviewing the candidate
• journals and workplace documentation
• third party reports from supervisors
• written or oral questions.
