Unit of competency details

Unit Descriptor 

This unit covers the competency required to safely handle, aim, fire, manoeuvre  and maintain line of sight ground based air defence weapon systems  designed to destroy hostile aircraft.

The operator must be thoroughly familiar with characteristics and capabilities of the missile system and competent in the application of fire in an operational or simulated operational environment.

The operator will work as part of a team and be under supervision for the whole operation except during the period of firing where the operator will be under direct control and receive orders that dictate all actions.

Application of the Unit 

The application of this unit in the workplace - the environments, complexities and situations involved - will be written during Phase II of the Review of the PUA00 Public Safety Training Package.

This text will be useful for the purposes of job descriptions, recruitment advice or job analysis; where possible, it will not be too job specific to allow other industries to import it into other Training Packages, where feasible.

ELEMENT 

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA 

1. Manoeuvre the weapon 

1.1 Weapon is prepared for movement in accordance with standard procedures 

1.2 Weapon is positioned as directed

1.3 Occupational health and safety (OH&S) requirements and recognised safety precautions are applied throughout the operation in accordance with standard procedures

2. Prepare the weapon for firing 

2.1 Ammunition is handled under supervision and in accordance with standard procedures

2.2 Ammunition is visually inspected, ammunition defects  are reported to supervisor and defective ammunition is quarantined as directed

2.3 Ammunition is loaded and unloaded as directed

2.4 Ancillary equipment  is positioned and operated as directed and in accordance with standard procedures

3. Engage aerial targets 

3.1 Aerial targets  are identified  and confirmed by supervisor

3.2 Targets are sighted and tracked using the system as directed and in accordance with standard procedures

3.3 Weapon is fired as ordered by supervisor

3.4 Defects with firing  are reported to supervisor and corrective action is taken as directed

3.5 Aim off drills are initiated on dispute of aircraft identification in accordance with standard procedures

4. Maintain the serviceability of the weapon 

4.1 Maintenance defects are reported to supervisor

4.2 Operating maintenance  is conducted in accordance with standard procedures

EVIDENCE GUIDE 

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit 

Assessment must confirm the ability to correctly identify the appropriate number of aerial targets as specified by Combat Arms Training Centre; to track and engage targets using very short range air defence systems and short range air defence systems; to successfully carry out simulated engagements using weapon simulators; and to communicate information quickly, clearly and accurately in a high pressure environment.

Consistency in performance 

Competency should be demonstrated over a range of actual or simulated weapon employment tasks.

Context of and specific resources for assessment 

Context of assessment 

Competency should be assessed in a simulated operational environment due to the high cost of ammunition. The simulation should replicate the live environment where stress and fatigue are key features. The individual must be assessed as part of a team.

Access to operational equipment, training and simulation equipment.

Guidance information for assessment 

Information that will assist or guide assessment will be written during Phase II of the Review of the PUA00 Public Safety Training Package.
