Unit of competency

Modification History

Release 1. Unit Code and Application changed. Prerequisite units removed. Elements and Performance Criteria simplified with Element 1 removed. Foundation Skills field populated. Range of Conditions removed with relevant information moved to Performance and Knowledge Evidence. Assessment Requirements clarified with generic foundation skills statements moved to appropriate section and duplication with Performance Criteria removed. Supersedes and is equivalent to MSTFD6004 Manage advanced patternmaking processes.

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage processes for patternmaking of complex or specialised garments. It may include patterns for unique body shapes or patterns involving complex construction features, complex zero-waste patternmaking methods, or virtual 3D pattern development.

This unit applies to patternmakers.

No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Pre-requisite Unit

Competency Field

Apparel and Textile Production

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Manage preparations for patternmaking process

1.1 Interpret design brief and specifications and identify scope of patternmaking requirements

1.2 Analyse critical measurements to develop patterns for unique body shapes, features and specialised garments

1.3 Determine patternmaking requirements and grading methodologies based on specifications

1.4 Analyse critical paths for the patternmaking process according to design specifications and other workplace considerations

2. Manage development of patterns

2.1 Identify requirements and organise preparation of patterns for sampling and product development to meet workplace needs

2.2 Confirm patterns for sampling and product development

2.3 Implement and monitor all aspects of sampling and product development to ensure patternmaking meets required quality standards

3. Review and document patternmaking process

3.1 Communicate with production personnel to finalise and assess the patternmaking process against the design specifications

3.2 Accurately document pattern development, formulas and methods used

3.3 Prepare and assemble required documentation in accordance with workplace procedures

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance but not explicit in the performance criteria.

  • Reading skills to interpret design specifications
  • Writing skills to develop and structure a cohesive patternmaking plan.

Other foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit.

Assessment requirements

Modification History

Release 1. Unit Code and Application changed. Prerequisite units removed. Elements and Performance Criteria simplified with Element 1 removed. Foundation Skills field populated. Range of Conditions removed with relevant information moved to Performance and Knowledge Evidence. Assessment Requirements clarified with generic foundation skills statements moved to appropriate section and duplication with Performance Criteria removed. Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:

  • manage the process for at least two of the following:
  • special purpose clothing
  • adaptive clothing
  • three-dimensional drape and pattern-cutting
  • zero-waste patternmaking
  • virtual 3D patternmaking
  • patternmaking involving subtraction cutting
  • digital or manual patternmaking processes with specialised detailing, fitting and/or structural requirements.

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:

  • patternmaking methodologies and their associated technologies:
  • block methodologies (national and international)
  • computer technologies
  • pattern grading
  • flat and draped patternmaking methodologies
  • pattern development processes:
  • selecting or developing suitable blocks
  • selecting or developing suitable style patterns for sampling and production
  • selecting or developing grade plans for the range
  • confirming specifications for blocks, style patterns and grade plans
  • preparing patterns
  • minimum and zero-waste patternmaking
  • critical measurements to plan patternmaking processes
  • critical path analysis for the patternmaking process
  • considerations for monitoring the patternmaking plan:
  • completing or confirming grades, markers and instructions for manufacture
  • identifying and addressing production problems, faults and quality issues in product or process
  • making changes and adjustments to patterns where necessary
  • managing observance of work health and safety (WHS) requirements
  • approval processes required
  • communication processes required for implementation of patternmaking plan
  • cost efficiency in patternmaking
  • patternmaking recording and reporting practices.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies. The following conditions must be met for this unit:

  • use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including:
  • design specifications
  • existing blocks
  • patternmaking tools and equipment.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
