Unit of competency

Modification History

Release 1. Unit code, Title and Application changed. Merges duplicating content of MSTCL3002 and MSTCL2019. Title changed for clarity and consistency. Prerequisite units removed. Elements and Performance Criteria simplified with Element 1 and 2 combined. Foundation Skills field populated. Range of Conditions removed with relevant information moved to Knowledge Evidence. Assessment Requirements clarified with generic foundation skills statements moved to appropriate section and duplication with Performance Criteria removed. Supersedes and is not equivalent to MSTCL3002 Prepare and produce a complex whole garment from specifications. Supersedes and is not equivalent to MSTCL2019 Sew components, complex tasks.

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to sew complete garments that include multiple pieces, involving the use of sewing techniques where the positioning, feeding and handling of work pieces involves discretionary changes, contouring or critical stopping points and/or special handling skills required to accommodate fabric variations. Garments may include shirts, trousers, dresses, unstructured jackets, stretch knits and skirts.

This unit applies to individuals working in accordance with established procedures using discretion, judgement and problem solving to complete work. It often applies to the sample machining role.

No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Competency Field

Apparel and Textile Production

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare to sew garments

1.1 Identify machining and productivity requirements from production specifications

1.2 Develop plan for garment construction that reflects the most efficient sequencing of work operations

1.3 Confirm suitability of work pieces and lay out in sequence according to construction plan

1.4 Prepare equipment and working area in accordance with job requirements

2. Sew garments

2.1 Sew work pieces according to construction plan and achieve outcomes within required timeframes

2.2 Control machine speed and work handling according to type of operation, fabric and product type

2.3 Inspect quality of both individual pieces and progressively constructed garment against quality standards and take appropriate action to rectify any deficiencies

2.4 Monitor performance of machine for signs of faulty operation, and use evidence from inspection of finished pieces

3. Complete work

3.1 Inspect and confirm that completed garment meets quality standards

3.2 Record results of inspection and action taken to either reject or correct faulty work

3.3 Record preventative action taken to avoid any recurrence of defective items

3.4 Process work for next operation according to job requirements

3.5 Complete required production records in accordance with workplace procedures

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance but not explicit in the performance criteria.

  • Reading skills to interpret familiar workplace procedures and work documentation
  • Writing skills to communicate simple factual information in familiar workplace documents
  • Numeracy skills to interpret numerical information in work specifications and adjust settings on sewing machines.

Other foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit.

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and demonstrated the ability to:

  • sew at least two different garments to specifications, workplace quality standards and time constraints, with work to involve:
  • feeding and handling involving directional changes, contouring or critical stopping points
  • feeding and handling skills required because of fabric or material variation
  • use of two different fabrics
  • at least five of the following components in any combination:
  • binds
  • buttons and buttonholes
  • collars
  • cuffs
  • facings (neck and armhole)
  • plackets
  • pockets (cut away, patch and in seam)
  • sleeves
  • waistbands (straight or shaped)
  • zips (dress, skirt, trouser and invisible).

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:

  • key aspects of sewing garments:
  • sequence of operations and factors that affect speed and productivity
  • techniques for sewing different types of components into complete garment
  • types, characteristics and uses of different machines and associated safety considerations
  • quality indicators and acceptable tolerances
  • common construction problems and how these are addressed
  • types of information included in production documentation.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies. The following conditions must be met for this unit:

  • use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including:
  • production specifications
  • garment components for assembly
  • sewing machine and threads
  • workplace procedures.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
