Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to assess and apply gilding requirements to new picture frames and those requiring repair or restoration.

This unit applies to picture framers offering specialised gilding services. They use discretion, judgement and specialised knowledge to select, use and adapt different materials and techniques

No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare for work

1.1 Identify gilding requirements from work order and examination of frame

1.2 Examine frame and identify whether new gilding, preservation or restoration techniques are required

1.3 Identify and follow work health and safety requirements throughout the work

1.4 Select and check tools and equipment for quality, serviceability and safety prior to use

1.5 Identify and assemble gilding materials and any associated finishes

1.6 Plan work sequence based on application techniques required

2. Apply gilding

2.1 Check frame surfaces for contamination and faults prior to finish application

2.2 Check frames for correct preparation and required maintenance of original finishes that require the removal of over painting

2.3 Repair or report surface faults in accordance with workplace procedures

2.4 Complete required composition work in accordance with workplace procedures

2.5 Apply gilding using established techniques in accordance with job requirements and workplace procedures

2.6 Apply required ornamentation in accordance with job requirements and workplace procedures

2.7 Check surface finish against job requirements and rectify any faults to achieve required result

3. Complete work

3.1 Mark completed work for identification and store in accordance with workplace procedures

3.2 Identify and store items for recycling in accordance with workplace procedures

3.3 Clean work area and safely dispose of rubbish

3.4 Accurately complete required workplace documentation

Performance Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has completed the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, and:

  • refurbished an existing gilded frame
  • used differing techniques and materials to prepare and gild 2 new frames.

Knowledge Evidence

There must be evidence the candidate has knowledge of:

  • work flow process for gilding operations
  • safety considerations and requirements for gilding, including personal protective equipment
  • mathematical procedures for estimation, measurement and use of ratios for mixing
  • types of specific work instructions for gilding:
  • choice of substrate
  • surface preparation
  • selection of bole or poliment
  • selection and application of size
  • selection and application of leaf, patination and sealing of leaf
  • techniques and application of gilding, including:
  • oil
  • size
  • quick size (acrylic)
  • water gilding based on the reactivation of the glue in the bole layer
  • new and emerging techniques, such as Kolnar gilding
  • types of leaf used in gilding and their features:
  • gold
  • silver
  • platinum in varying alloys
  • schlagmetal (brass) in varying alloys
  • copper
  • aluminium
  • the role and nature of composition work
  • methods, characteristics and problems of application
  • functions, features and safe use of gilding tools and equipment:
  • gilder's cushion
  • gilder's knife
  • gilder's tip
  • brushes
  • agate burnishing stones
  • materials used in gilding, their features and uses:
  • alloy and aluminium leaf
  • bole (wet or dry)

Assessment Conditions

Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects workplace conditions and contingencies. The following conditions must be met for this unit:

  • use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including:
  • workspace equipped with:
  • gilding tools, equipment and consumables to complete tasks in the Performance Evidence
  • personal protective equipment
  • work orders
  • items to be gild finished.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
