Unit of competency

Modification History

Release 1. Supersedes and is equivalent to MSFFL3096 Edge sand timber flooring. Changes to title, application, elements and performance criteria to improve clarity and consistency across MSFFL units. Changes to assessment requirements.

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare for work and edge sand existing floors using a disc, orbital or belt sander to grade the surface and remove cupping, ridges, high points or deep scratches along the edges of the room, in corners or areas of reduced access (such as wardrobes). The pattern of sanding is to overlap and blend the floorboards into the body of the sanded floor.

Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.

The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training. They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

1.3 Assess the condition of the floor, and determine the extent of edge sanding required to satisfy the job instructions

1.4 Identify hazards and ensure dust containment strategies and other risk treatments are in place and operating

1.5 Remove fittings, fixtures and other objects from the floor according to workplace procedures

1.6 Select and check the sanding machines and other required equipment and tools are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures

1.7 Gather sanding discs, pads and sheets and other materials required by job instructions, and check they meet quality requirements and are ready to use according to manufacturer instructions

2. Operate sanding machinery to edge sand the floor

2.1 Set up, check and adjust the safety and other features of sanding machines according to manufacturer instructions

2.2 Conduct trial runs to check the operation of the sanding machines and the quality of the finished work

2.3 Operate the sanding machines to sand the floor following a systematic pattern to maximise efficiency and achieve job instructions

2.4 Select, attach, routinely check and change sanding belts or papers to ensure a quality finish

2.5 Continually monitor the sanding machines to ensure their motors are running within the manufacturer safe operating limits and there are no apparent electrical faults, and fix deficiencies and ensure adjustments as required

2.6 Check the floor is sanded correctly according to job instructions and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies

3. Complete the task according to workplace procedures

3.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste

3.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools

3.3 Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
