Application

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to fit out marine vessels.

It includes set out, construction, assembly and installation of a variety of components and also includes the installation of thermal, noise, vibration and fire control insulation materials.

This unit applies to both 'on the job' and 'pre-fabricated structure fitouts' and all work is carried out safely to specified industry standards for timber joinery, surface finish, appearance characteristics, dressing or plugging of fastenings.

Where lines plan drawings and loftings are required to be interpreted unit MEM09021 Interpret and produce drawings of curved 3-D shapes should also be selected.

Where straightforward installation of fittings/accessories is required unit MEM18002 Use power tools/hand held operations should also be selected.

Where construction of fibre reinforced plastics components are required to be undertaken unit MEM25002 Form and integrate fibre-reinforced structures should also be selected.

Where construction of solid timber shapes using hot processes is required to be undertaken unit MEM25009 Form timber shapes using hot processes should also be selected.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two (2) occasions and include:

• following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
• identifying and interpreting specifications, plans and drawings to perform fitout procedures
• identifying job fixing methods, fitout components, scantling sizes, patterns and materials from fitout plans and procedures
• identifying component structure, materials and assembly procedure and determining quantities and producing cutting list
• marking out materials and selecting and using appropriate tools/equipment/machinery to produce the desired shape and appearance
• assembling, fitting, adjusting and fixing equipment and components and checking assemblies against specifications for correct sizing and construction standard
• sanding surface area of component parts and treating surface areas for preservation and testing for watertight integrity
• preparing fitout structures for coating and adhesive applications and fixing components to meet job specifications.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

• safe work practices and procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
• procedures used for drawing identification and accuracy
• common structures used in boat fitout
• job fixing methods, fitout components, materials and use of patterns
• procedures used for constructing and assembling component
• typical sizing, common species, strength and appearance requirements
• practice used for machining of material
• material characteristics in terms of species, strength, appearance and grade
• marking and cutting procedures
• practices used in identification and assembly sequence
• assembly and fastening methods
• surface preservation pre-coating and application method
• practices used for fitting and levelling
• types of fastenings and methods of fixing/fastening applications and material species
• watertight integrity testing methods and their application
• waste disposal obligations and regulations.

Assessment Conditions

• Assessors must:

• have vocational competency in performing fitout procedures at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
• satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacementand comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacementor equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires.

• Assessment must occur in a functioning workplace. Where assessment in the workplace would be unsafe, impractical or threatens the environment, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects the circumstances that would be experienced in a functioning workplace. Assessment must cover all aspects of workplace performance, including task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
• Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.
• Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
