Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to seek business advantages by developing innovative and sustainable solutions in information and communications technology (ICT) project plans.

It applies to individuals who prepare planning, cost-benefit analysis and return on investment for the implementation of sustainable schemes at the enterprise level and who work with high-level specialist training skills and knowledge in optical telecommunications and IT networks using internet protocol (IP) systems.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare information for establishing a business case

1.1 Evaluate proposed ICT project to determine scope and potential of sustainability integration

1.3 Analyse and evaluate expected goals of project and relate business case to broader organisational goals

1.4 Identify and consult with stakeholders to plan and validate options

2. Produce business case for ICT sustainability project

2.1 Evaluate critical success factors to determine vital strategy for project to successfully implement sustainability and gain competitive advantage

2.2 Prepare cost-benefit analysis and estimate overall benefit obtained by introducing or improving sustainability in project

2.3 Prepare estimate of costs over appropriate time period and determine potential of return on investment (RoI)

2.4 Evaluate and analyse alternative options to determine benefits, disadvantages, costs and risks

3. Produce business case documentation

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

  • demonstrate a measurable improvement of a business through the implementation of a chosen strategy using benchmark indicators
  • communicate effectively with stakeholders on approaches to sustainability improvements, development and implementation, and contribute to resolution of disputes among stakeholders
  • use software systems for recording and filing documentation, measuring current usage, and interpreting all visual data and information
  • identify improvements and benchmarks against industry best practice by continuously reviewing and improving policies over time.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

  • summarise best practice approaches relevant to sustainability
  • discuss environmental and sustainability legislation, regulations and codes of practice applicable to the industry and organisation
  • describe equal employment opportunity, equity and diversity principles and work health and safety (WHS) implications of policy being developed
  • explain policy development processes and practices
  • outline principles, practices and available tools and techniques of sustainability management relevant to the information and communications technology (ICT) industry
  • elucidate quality assurance systems relevant to own organisation
  • discuss relevant industry competency
  • evaluate relevant organisational policies, procedures and protocols as they relate to sustainability
  • summarise relevant systems and procedures to aid in the achievement of workplace sustainability
  • explain how to calculate ICT power consumption
  • discuss energy consumption and energy audit methodology
  • summarise the environmental impacts of products, processes, systems and services.

Assessment Conditions

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the telecommunications – sustainability field of work and include access to:

  • sites on which preparation of a business case for introducing or improving sustainability in an ICT project may be carried out
  • relevant legislation, standards, guidelines, reports, and equipment specifications and drawings
  • a range of workplace documentation and personnel information and resources, such as compliance obligations, organisational plans and work responsibilities.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
