Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to select, operate and test an array of networking tools to maintain high security networks.

The unit applies to individuals who may work in technical management support and security roles with responsibility for maintaining network security using a wide range of information and communications technology (ICT) skills and knowledge.

No licensing, legislative, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Apply command-line tools

1.1 Confirm work brief, relating to work tasks, hardware and peripheral quality standards, work health and safety (WHS) standards, and organisational policies and procedures

1.2 Analyse command-line interface and graphical user interface (GUI) systems

1.3 Identify command-line tools according to analysis

1.4 Write command-line text in required GUI environment

1.5 Run command line and report issues to required personnel according to organisational policies and procedures

2. Apply hardware tools

2.1 Identify organisational computing hardware and components

2.2 Assess hardware quality standards according to work brief

2.3 Test network security using hardware tools according to WHS standards

2.4 Document test results in required format

3. Apply software tools

3.1 Assess organisational computing software

3.2 Access and identify software quality standards

3.3 Conduct risk analysis and document network vulnerabilities

3.4 Recommend computer safeguard guidelines according to risk analysis findings

3.5 Present recommendations to required personnel in required format

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • use at least three different types of network tools to maintain high security networks.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • distinguish between different types of industry-recognised network tools
  • apply required organisational policies and procedures.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • different types of industry-recognised network tools to maintain high security networks
  • functions and features of:
  • security guidelines
  • command-line interface and graphical user interface (GUI) systems
  • command-line tools
  • command-line text
  • high security networks, software and hardware
  • computing diagnostic tools
  • strategies to undertake risk analysis
  • techniques to categorise system vulnerability alerts
  • types and features of security threats on devices and networks
  • key organisational processes and requirements to carry out required work tasks, including:
  • backing up and restoring operations
  • updating settings
  • writing command-line text
  • reporting security and software updates
  • raising threats and alerts to supervisory personnel
  • organisational formats for documentation and recommendations
  • work health and safety (WHS) standards, organisational policies and procedures, and legislative requirements relating to work tasks.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • required networking tools, hardware, software and operating systems
  • opportunities for interaction with others
  • WHS standards, and organisational policies and procedures required to demonstrate the performance evidence.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
