Application

This unit of competency describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to recognise the main medications and their actions in the treatment of malignant disease and immunosuppressive disorders so as to dispense medication to patients who suffer from these disorders.

This unit applies to hospital or health services pharmacy assistants and technicians working under the supervision of an authorised person.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA 

Elements describe the essential outcomes

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Identify medication to treat malignant diseases and immunosuppressive disorders.

1.1. Identify the malignant diseases and immunosuppressive disorders being treated.

1.2. Identify the factors that lead to the successful medicinal treatment of malignant diseases and immunosuppressive disorders.

1.3. Consult authorised personnel to verify the successful medicinal treatment of malignant diseases and immunosuppressive disorders.

2. Prepare appropriate medication to treat malignant diseases and immunosuppressive disorders to dispense to patients.

2.1. Identify the appropriate malignant diseases and immunosuppressive disorders medication to be dispensed to patients in accordance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) policies, guidelines and symbols.

2.2. Confirm the medication to be dispensed to the patient with an authorised person and prepare as directed.

3. Prepare to provide a continuing medication education session for peers.

3.1. Obtain and read presentation materials for continuing medication education session.

3.2. Chose a delivery method for the continuing medication education session.

3.3. Make arrangements, including time, venue and logistical issues for the delivery of the continuing medication education session.

4. Deliver the continuing medication education session for peers.

4.1. Describe malignant diseases, immunodeficiency and musculoskeletal disorders and associated symptoms for each disorder.

4.2. Explain common supportive care treatments as approved by an authorised person.

4.3. Explain the main effects of common medicines used for each of the disorders.

4.4. Refer to appropriate references to identify the requirements relating to the findings.

4.5. Use patient case studies to demonstrate treatment types, duration, side effects and further treatment.

4.6. Present the standard medication references and your organisation's prescribed policies.

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit in the context of the job role, and:

  • prepare and dispense Immunosuppressive medication on at least 10 occasions, including:
  • demonstrating the ability to source information
  • confirming medication dispensing with an authorised person
  • provide a continuing medication education session focusing on the pharmaceutical aspects, that includes:
  • at least two malignant diseases, focussing on the appropriate supportive care treatments and the reasons for their use
  • at least one condition that requires immunosuppressive medication
  • session delivery methods, including:
  • digital presentation
  • demonstration
  • referral to findings
  • activities and questions
  • perform the activities outlined in the performance criteria of this unit during a period of 240 hours of work related to hospital pharmacy support in a clinical workplace environment. These 240 hours may be applied collectively across all units of competency that include the requirement for workplace hours for the purposes of assessment.

Knowledge Evidence

Demonstrated knowledge required to complete the tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit:

  • understand information on malignant diseases and immunosuppressive disorders including:
  • malignant diseases and immune related disorders that require immunosuppressive medication and determine appropriate treatments and reasons for their use
  • medication used for each treatment and the supportive care medications required
  • side effects of the medication
  • adverse reactions to medication that require referral to an authorised person
  • relevant information for review by an authorised person
  • standard pharmaceutical references, including:
  • Australian Medicines Handbook (AMH)
  • Australian Pharmaceutical Formulary Handbook (APF)
  • Monthly Index of Medical Specialities (MIMS) or AusDI Advanced
  • Micromedex
  • relevant National, State or Territory regulatory and legislative requirements
  • the legal responsibilities of providers of health care in relation to confidentiality, patient rights, duty of care and implications of negligence
  • limitations of own work role including identification and referring of issues outside scope of own practice to the authorised person
  • Work Health and Safety (WHS) policies, guidelines and symbols and their relevance to dispensing medication
  • common malignant diseases:
  • carcinoma
  • leukaemia
  • lymphoma
  • melanomas
  • basic difference between healthy and malignant cells:
  • growth in contrast to normal cells, cancer cells do not stop growing and dividing that results in the formation of a tumour
  • communication including cancer cells do not interact with other cells as normal cells do
  • cell repair and cell death including normal cells are either repaired or undergo apoptosis when they are damaged or get old, whereas cancer cells don't undergo apoptosis
  • the role of common supportive care medications for oncology patients and non-pharmacology methods to improve quality of life
  • presentation methods for continuing education.

Assessment Conditions

Skills must be demonstrated in the workplace with the addition of simulations and scenarios where the full range of contexts and situations have not been provided in the workplace.

Assessment must ensure access to:

  • use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including:
  • relevant legislation, regulations and guidelines
  • medicine information and resources on malignant disease and immunosuppressive disorders
  • authorised person with whom to consult.

Assessors must satisfy the Standards for Registered Training Organisations’ requirements for assessors.
