Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare for painting

1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Select appropriate personal protective and other equipment and check for operational effectiveness.

1.3 Obtain type and quantity of panels for painting from storage.

1.4 Select panel painting process, feed rates and paints and plan in line with work order.

2. Paint panels

2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.

2.2 Load paint products in equipment and apply paint to panel, monitoring and adjusting flow rates and viscosity continually.

2.3 Check paint operations regularly and clear blockages and filters to maintain paint coverage.

2.4 Check panels regularly for surface quality and contamination, and grade according to work order requirements.

2.5 Remove defective panels from painting process and review for disposal or re-painting.

2.6 Dry and stack material safely in designated location.

3. Shut down and clean equipment

3.1 Coordinate shutdown procedures with other line operators in line with organisational safety procedures.

3.2 Turn off pumps and flush equipment in line with manufacturer’s instructions.

3.3 Dispose of excess paint and flushing liquid in line with environmental protection practices.

3.4 Store equipment and paint in line with organisational procedures.

3.5 Record and report production outcomes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.

Foundation Skills

This section describes those core and employment skills that are essential to performance and are not explicit in the performance criteria.

Numeracy skills to:

  • identify quantities of required material within work orders and count numbers of panels
  • interpret order requirements and set up equipment to achieve correct flow rates and viscosity
  • calculate rate of paint application to optimise quality and quantity of production output.

Oral communication skills to:

  • ask questions and actively listen to clarify contents of work orders.

Reading skills to:

  • interpret:
  • workplace health and safety and other organisational procedures
  • work orders
  • safety data sheets
  • manufacturers’ instructions.

Writing skills to:

  • complete accurate basic records for production outcomes and equipment faults.

Planning and organising skills to:

  • efficiently and logically sequence the stages of preparation and production using work order to guide activities.

Problem-solving skills to:

  • identify and dispose of defective panels or rectify
  • identify processing problems and faulty equipment and resolve by reporting or rectifying.

Technology skills to:

  • select and use appropriate personal protective equipment for painting panels
  • efficiently and safely operate painting equipment.

Replaces equivalent unit FPIWPP3202B Paint panels, which was first released with FPI11 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 2.2. This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Assessment requirements now specify the performance and knowledge evidence, as well as assessment conditions for this unit of competency. These sections simplify and replace components used in the previous unit format, including Required Skills and Knowledge, Evidence Guide and Range Statement

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.  If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

  • paint panels in line with individual work orders for each job; types of panels include:
  • medium density fibreboard
  • chipboard
  • fibreboard
  • plywood
  • at the completion of each of the above jobs:
  • shut-down and clean equipment in line with organisational safety procedures
  • dispose of excess paint in line with environmental protection practices
  • safely store unused paint
  • stack finished panels in storage location according to common size, thickness, length and coating.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • environmental protection practices for painting panels:
  • reducing water and energy use
  • cleaning plant, tools and equipment
  • disposing of, recycling and reusing timber
  • disposing of hazardous substances
  • storage layout and categories for:
  • raw materials
  • stacking finished panels
  • characteristics of timber panels and the types of paint most suitable for application:
  • medium density fibreboard
  • chipboard
  • fibreboard
  • plywood
  • properties, at a basic level of understanding, of paints:
  • water based
  • oil based
  • solvent based
  • viscosity, film thickness and film wetness of paints
  • methods used to safely store paint
  • typical work flow processes for painting panels
  • purpose, features, operation, shut down and cleaning of painting equipment including:
  • roller coating lines
  • spray booths
  • curtain coating lines
  • trays
  • overflow trays
  • thinner reservoirs
  • spray guns
  • roller coaters
  • range of appropriate paint flow rates to avoid equipment blockages and optimise quality and quantity of production output
  • organisational procedures specific to surface painting panels:
  • workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out, use of personal protective equipment and handling hazardous substances
  • communication reporting lines
  • recording and reporting production outcomes and equipment faults.

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

  • painting equipment which must include one or more of the following:
  • roller coating lines
  • spray booths
  • curtain coating lines
