Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide Pastoral Narrative Disclosure (PND) to assist members and their families who may have Moral Injury.

This unit applies to Chaplaincy in Defence, although it would also apply to others who work in this field, including emergency first responders. This includes theology of multi-faith or other belief systems.

The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.

Those undertaking this unit would work independently and perform complex tasks in a complex environment.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.

Apply the information with appropriate pastoral care strategies in a Defence context to members and their families in accordance with organisational procedures

Confirm understanding of Moral Injury from member and their family

Provide advice on the PND model

Summarise the eight stages of the PND model used in the Moral Injury recovery process

Explain to the member and their family on how the PND model can assist in Moral Injury recovery

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

  • adhering to faith standards, organisational policies and procedures
  • analysing and evaluating information
  • analysing complex personal issues
  • applying active listening skills
  • applying counselling skills
  • creating a pastoral care plan
  • documenting and recording the intervention
  • maintaining records in accordance with organisational policy
  • planning Moral Injury support
  • selecting language style suitable to the individual and context for the purpose of establishing rapport, maintaining and developing relationships
  • summarising and clarifying ideas
  • supporting members of other faiths
  • using a variety of verbal and non-verbal communication techniques, including body language, language style and gestures.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

  • biological, psychological, social and spiritual wellbeing
  • building resilience factors that impact spiritual wellbeing
  • moral injury causes and risks to others
  • moral injury definition
  • moral injury manual
  • pastoral care requirements
  • Pastoral Narrative Disclosure (PND) stages:
  • rapport
  • reflection
  • review
  • reconstruction
  • restoration
  • ritual
  • renewal
  • reconnection and referral
  • privacy
  • record management in accordance with organisational policy
  • relevant key support personnel, including health care professionals
  • relevant legislation, organisational policies and procedures
  • relevant mobile applications (apps) used in individual support.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must hold credentials specified within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must satisfy the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence and all regulatory requirements included within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations. Where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that reflect workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment must include access to:

  • a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or simulations
  • acceptable means of simulation assessment
  • applicable documentation, including workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals
  • relevant materials, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) currently used in industry.
