Unit Descriptor

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to source information on history and theory relevant to one’s own area of creative work.

Application of the Unit

People developing their skills in any area of arts practice apply the skills and knowledge described in this unit. The effectiveness of any arts activity is enhanced when supported by an understanding of the history and theory associated with its genre, style or medium. Supervision and guidance would usually be provided.

More complex skills associated with applying historical and theoretical knowledge to own arts practice are covered in the unit CUVRES301A Apply knowledge of history and theory to own arts practice.

Assessment must ensure access to:

  • a range of relevant and current information sources
  • appropriate technology to source and collect information.

Method of assessment 

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

  • review of case studies prepared by the candidate to assess ability to apply collected information to own arts practice
  • oral or written questioning about information sources and different aspects of history and theory
  • review of portfolios of evidence
  • review of third-party reports from experienced practitioners.

Assessment methods should closely reflect workplace demands (e.g. literacy) and the needs of particular groups (e.g. people with disabilities, and people who may have literacy or numeracy difficulties, such as speakers of languages other than English, remote communities and those with interrupted schooling).
