Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to groom the different coat types that occur in dogs.

This unit applies to individuals working in the companion animal industry sector where dog grooming services are provided under supervision. These individuals take responsibility for their own work and for the quality of the work of others. This includes using discretion and judgement in the selection, allocation and use of available resources.

No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

The prerequisite units of competency for this unit are:

  • ACMCAS306 Provide grooming services for companion animal comfort
  • ACMCAS307 Provide companion animal hydro-bathing services

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit.

There must be evidence that the individual has groomed at least four breeds of dog, with different coat and grooming requirements, including:

  • assessed health and condition of animal's coat and determined grooming requirements with client
  • followed workplace instructions and applied industry-recognised grooming methods and procedures for different coat types to maintain/restore animal comfort
  • handled dogs in a safe and humane manner
  • selected, used and maintained grooming and styling equipment and supplies according to manufacturers' specifications and industry standards
  • updated records.

Knowledge Evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • Australian National Kennel Council dog breed standards
  • conformation features of dogs
  • disinfectants, cleaning agents, cleaning techniques and cleaning equipment and materials used in a companion animal workplace
  • dog anatomy and physiology related to grooming procedures
  • dog behaviour traits, signs of distress or illness
  • dog coat types and determining coat characteristics
  • dog grooming products, techniques and services
  • industry-recognised maintenance and restoration dog grooming techniques, procedures and equipment for a range of coat types and conditions
  • principles of animal ethics and welfare
  • safe dog handling and restraint techniques and procedures
  • standards, guidelines and approaches to environmental sustainability relevant to the animal care industry
  • zoonotic diseases and methods of prevention and control.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment of skills must take place under the following conditions:

  • physical conditions:
  • skills must be demonstrated in a workplace setting or an environment that accurately represents workplace conditions
  • resources, equipment and materials:
  • live dogs for grooming
  • products and equipment for grooming dogs
  • disinfectants and cleaning agents.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
