This unit covers the competency required to refurbish explosive ordnance packaging.

Refurbishing of the packaging is carried out in accordance with organisational policy and procedures while adhering to all relevant occupational health and safety (OH&S) requirements.

Application of the Unit

Application of the Unit 

This competency normally applies to the individual who is required to prepare for and refurbish explosive ordnance packaging following deterioration or damage of the packaging through handling.

The unit requires the individual to inspect the packaging to determine whether it can be refurbished, refurbish the packaging and maintain a range of documentation.

1. Prepare for refurbishment 

1.1 Requirement for refurbishing of packaging  is identified from work requests/instructions and is confirmed

1.2 OH&S requirements, including those contained in organisational  procedures, are applied throughout the operation

1.3 Technical references , tools, equipment and consumables  required for maintenance are identified, acquired and prepared in accordance with organisational procedures

1.4 Explosive ordnance packaging is inspected to confirm that it is free from explosives  in accordance with statutory and organisational procedures

2. Refurbish explosive ordnance packaging 

2.1 Explosive ordnance packaging is inspected to ensure it is capable of being refurbished in accordance with statutory and organisational requirements

2.2 Explosive ordnance packaging is refurbished in accordance with organisational policy and procedures and technical specifications

3. Carry out post reconditioning procedures 

3.1 Explosive ordnance packaging is processed  in accordance with organisational procedures

3.2 Housekeeping procedures are conducted in accordance with workshop requirements

3.3 Documentation and records  are maintained in accordance with statutory, organisational and workshop requirements

Method of assessment 

In a public safety environment assessment is usually conducted via direct observation in a training environment or in the workplace via subject matter supervision and/or mentoring, which is typically recorded in a competency workbook.

Assessment is completed using appropriately qualified assessors who select the most appropriate method of assessment.

Assessment may occur in an operational environment or in an industry-approved simulated work environment. Forms of assessment that are typically used include:

  • direct observation
  • interviewing the candidate
  • journals and workplace documentation
  • third party reports from supervisors
  • written or oral questions.
