Application

This unit describes the outcomes required to plan leak detection activities and to locate, identify and report leaks in water distribution networks (pressure mains).

This unit applies to those working as field staff with a specific responsibility for planning and implementing leak detection activities.

The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to, particularly those related to WHS.

Those undertaking this unit would work under indirect supervision, while performing routine tasks in a familiar context, ensuring minimum damage to the environment.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.

1. Plan for leak detection 

1.1 Determine work site boundaries and leak detection requirements from plans, specifications and instructions.

1.2 Select and check equipment.

1.3 Plan for leak detection using site inspection and service search diagrams according to work site requirements.

2. Operate leak detection equipment and report work 

2.1 Determine and mark work site boundaries from plans and service search diagrams.

2.2 Select, fit and use personal protective equipment.

2.3 Operate leak detection equipment.

2.4 Mark the location of leaks.

2.5 Expose leaks and arrange repair according to testing outcomes and organisational and statutory requirements.

2.6 Review, record and report work.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the candidate must demonstrate evidence of performance of the following on at least one occasion.

  • analysing data to take remedial action
  • interpreting plans, specifications, policies and procedures
  • providing maintenance records for equipment
  • identifying safety risks and hazards
  • planning leak detection activities
  • locating, identifying and reporting leaks in water distribution networks
  • operating leak detection equipment
  • locating and marking leaks and arranging repair activities
  • completing documentation

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the depth of knowledge demonstrated must be appropriate to the job context of the candidate.

  • basic calculation
  • identification, repair, lock out procedures
  • system hydraulics
  • system layout
  • environmental aspects
  • relevant utilities and service bodies
  • landscape and ground structure of work area
  • risk assessment and the identification of potential hazards
  • equipment operation, capacity and limitations
  • effects of weather and conditions on site or plant

Assessment Conditions

Competency should be assessed in an actual workplace or in a simulated environment, with access to equipment and infrastructure appropriate to the outcome. Competency should be demonstrated over time to ensure the candidate is assessed across a variety of situations.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
