This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to design and create a web page layout, to suit a range of devices and a variety of browsers, to industry standards.

It applies to individuals who work as web designers and web developers, have a highly developed understanding of design principles and apply technical skills proficiently, according to unique specifications.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

  • develop a complex website layout
  • layout page elements to suit a variety of devices
  • test web pages in a variety of browsers
  • validate the pages against industry standards.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

  • explain the principles of web site design
  • describe and apply the following in web site design:
  • hypertext markup language (HTML) and extensible hypertext markup language (XHTML)
  • cascading style sheet (CSS)
  • hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP)
  • techniques to correct browser incompatibilities
  • outline World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards, and explain their application to web design.

Assessment Conditions

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the website technologies field of work, and include access to:

  • a computer
  • an aesthetic presentation brief
  • a variety of browsers
  • the internet, to validate web pages against the W3C.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
