Application

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to undertake reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM) analysis used in logistics support analysis (LSA). It applies to logistics support systems in a Defence environment and broader constituent capabilities.

It includes identifying RAM source data, undertaking RAM analysis, and maintaining RAM data.

RAM engineering concerns the study, characterisation, measurement, prediction and analysis of the failure and repair of systems in order to improve capability and reduce cost of ownership by eliminating or reducing the chance and severity of failures, and reducing the downtime associated with system failure.

This unit is appropriate for technical specialists supporting integrated logistics functions. Typically, these individuals will have existing vocational or higher education qualifications related to engineering, and significant engineering support experience. They must demonstrate the ability to work independently or as part of a team under direct and/or indirect supervision, use discretion and judgement, and take responsibility for the quality of their outputs. All activities are carried out in accordance with relevant policy and procedures.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two separate occasions and include:

  • identifying, interpreting and applying organisational procurement and supply chain policies
  • identifying reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM) source data
  • identifying and consulting with relevant stakeholders
  • identifying and analysing potential asset failures
  • conducting failure modes, effects and criticality analysis (FMECA)
  • calculating system level reliability and availability metrics
  • determining maintenance and supply support requirements
  • capturing and interpreting in-service RAM data
  • using a data collection system to produce logistics support analysis (LSA) reporting.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

  • organisational procurement and supply chain policies
  • industry standards relevant to integrated logistics support (ILS), LSA and RAM
  • techniques to read and interpret:
  • engineering design notes and specifications
  • original equipment manufacturer (OEM) data
  • data requirements and sources to inform RAM
  • LSA and modelling concepts and techniques
  • RAM in the Defence capability systems life cycle
  • RAM activity descriptions
  • RAM modelling and simulation techniques
  • use of FMECA in LSA
  • use of level of repair analysis (LORA) in LSA
  • techniques used to assess and allocate targets to systems and sub-systems
  • organisational ILS data collection and reporting systems.

Assessment Conditions

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, which include requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment include:

  • a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or simulations
  • applicable documentation, including organisational policies and procedures, legislation, data and/or modelling applicable to ILS, industry standards and/or specifications and access to relevant organisational information management systems
  • relevant materials, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) currently used in industry.
