Application

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to undergo an introduction to the transport industry.

It includes identifying the transport supply chain, relevant transport industry regulators and associations and licensing requirements, the impact of environmental issues, employment pathways and information technology systems and devices used in the transport sector.

Work is performed under limited supervision.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

  • applying workplace policies and procedures relating to the job role
  • applying procedures and information relevant to information technology equipment, telematic devices and In Vehicle Monitoring Systems (IVMS) used in the transport industry
  • reading and interpreting instructions, procedures, information and signs relevant to job role.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

  • the flow of freight/cargo through the transport supply chain
  • relevant legislation and regulations relating to the job role in a road transport business
  • driver opportunities requiring a heavy vehicle licence
  • driver opportunities not requiring a heavy vehicle licence
  • factors impacting an owner driver pathway in the road transport industry
  • education and training opportunities relevant to the chosen pathway skill requirements
  • forms of employment and their impact on a typical business in transport including:
  • part time
  • contract
  • job-share
  • 3rd party providers
  • opportunities and perception of job roles in the road transport industry
  • types and functionality of information technology equipment utilised
  • codes for the heavy vehicle licences
  • regulatory requirements in relation to:
  • environmental sustainability practices
  • pre-requisites required for each class of licence and period to be held
  • fatigue risk management
  • work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS)/occupational safety and health (OSH) requirements
  • varying driving style and its impact on fuel consumption

Assessment Conditions

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, which include requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations. Where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that reflect workplace conditions.

Resources for assessment must include access to:

  • relevant and appropriate materials, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment currently used in industry
  • applicable documentation including workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals
