Application

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to operate specialised light load shifting equipment.

It includes planning work for current working conditions; using controls and equipment operating systems to manage moving a unit and accessory operations; locating load and identifying load characteristics; moving materials and loads; monitoring and operating controls; and stopping, parking and securing equipment after operation in accordance with relevant state and/or territory codes, licence and/or permit and workplace requirements and regulations in the stevedoring, transport, warehousing and/or logistics industries.

Safety checks and equipment tests are performed under limited supervision.

Where the specialised light load shifting equipment operated is considered to be high-risk work, the operator must hold a high-risk work licence.

Plan work for current working conditions 

1.1 

Traffic flow and work area conditions are constantly assessed and anticipated to ensure no injury to people or damage to equipment, loads or facilities

Load characteristics are taken into account to ensure appropriate attachments are used to transport load, as required

Hazards are identified, risks are assessed, and control measures are implemented

Occurrences in work area that affect safety and efficiency of operations are reported to appropriate personnel

Use controls and equipment operating systems to manage moving unit and accessory operations

Light load shifting equipment is prepared and appropriate attachment is fitted

Gear and operational levers are checked to ensure they are in neutral position prior to inserting ignition key and starting engine

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all the requirements of the elements, performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

  • applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards
  • applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures
  • communicating effectively with others
  • completing relevant documentation
  • implementing contingency plans
  • modifying activities depending on operational contingencies, risk situations and environments
  • monitoring and prioritising work activities in terms of planned schedule, predicting consequences and identifying improvements
  • monitoring performance of equipment and taking appropriate actions, as required
  • operating and adapting to differences in equipment in accordance with operating procedures
  • operating electronic communications equipment to required protocol
  • reading, interpreting and following relevant instructions, procedures, information and signs
  • reporting and/or rectifying identified problems, faults or malfunctions promptly in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures
  • selecting and using relevant gear and accessories when operating specialised light load shifting equipment
  • selecting and using required personal protective equipment (PPE) conforming to industry and work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) standards
  • servicing equipment in terms of maintenance schedule and workplace procedures
  • working systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods or equipment.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all the requirements of the elements, performance criteria and include knowledge of:

  • conveyed material potential for toxicity, reactiveness, material grade, type and purpose, including information from relevant safety data sheets (SDS)/material safety data sheets (MSDS) and current hazardous or dangerous goods regulation documentation requirements
  • documentation, record requirements and housekeeping procedures, including:
  • relevant permit and licence requirements
  • site layout and obstacles
  • manufacturer specifications and guidelines
  • operational safety requirements and precautions for specialised light load shifting equipment concerned
  • operational work systems, equipment, management and site operating systems for operating specialised light load shifting equipment
  • problems that may occur and appropriate actions that can be taken to resolve these problems
  • purpose, characteristics, capabilities, requirements and limitations of specialised light load shifting equipment
  • relevant regulations for operating specialised light load shifting equipment, including relevant hazardous or dangerous goods systems and relevant bond, quarantine or other legislative requirements
  • relevant WHS/OHS and environmental protection procedures and guidelines
  • workplace procedures and policies for operating specialised light load shifting equipment.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must hold credentials specified within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must satisfy the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence and all regulatory requirements included within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment must include access to:

  • a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or simulations
  • relevant and appropriate materials, tools, equipment and PPE currently used in industry
  • applicable documentation, including legislation, regulations, codes of practice, workplace procedures and operation manuals.
