This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to drive a taxi safely across a variety of driving contexts, in compliance with relevant state/territory roads and traffic authority licence requirements and regulations for a commercial taxi.

It includes maintaining systematic and efficient control of all taxi functions, monitoring traffic and road conditions, managing taxi condition and performance, and effectively managing hazardous situations.

Driving is performed with limited or no supervision, and with full accountability and responsibility for self and others in achieving the prescribed outcomes.

This unit meets part of the certification requirements for obtaining taxi driver accreditation. As requirements may vary between states and territories, people seeking taxi accreditation should contact their state or territory taxi regulator.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

• applying map reading and road navigation techniques
• applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards
• applying relevant legislation, work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) practices and workplace procedures
• applying safe driving techniques to avoid potential hazards
• checking and replenishing fluids, and refuelling and carrying out lubrication processes during work activities
• completing relevant documentation
• driving a taxi, including:

• driving in reverse
• managing engine power
• parking, shutting down and securing taxi
• positioning taxi
• starting taxi
• steering and manoeuvring taxi
• stopping taxi

• driving in typical road transport situations including:

• on a private road
• on the open road
• typical weather conditions
• while at a depot or base
• while at a customer workplace or worksite

• driving taxi in accordance with traffic regulations and manufacturer specifications
• monitoring and prioritising work activities
• monitoring performance of taxi and its equipment and taking appropriate action as required
• reading and interpreting instructions, procedures, information and signs relevant to driving a taxi
• reporting and/or addressing identified problems, security incidents, faults or malfunctions promptly, in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures
• using taxi controls and equipment.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

• differences between transmission types
• driving hazards and related safe driving techniques
• efficient driving techniques
• engine power management and safe driving strategies
• factors that may cause traffic delays and diversions and related action that can be taken
• pre-operational checks carried out on taxi and related action
• procedures to be followed in an emergency or breakdown
• relevant state/territory road traffic/taxi control authority road rules, regulations, permit and licence requirements taxi handling procedures
• relevant WHS/OHS and environmental procedures and regulations
• taxi security procedures and precautions
• workplace driving and operational instructions.

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, which include requirements in the Standards forRegistered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Practical driving aspects must be assessed in a vehicle typical of that used in industry, be roadworthy and driven on typical road transport conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
