Application

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to check conveyor operational status, in accordance with workplace procedures and relevant regulatory requirements within the transport and logistics industry.

It includes inspecting conveyor system and work areas, checking equipment operational capability, identifying and assessing faults and reporting inspection results.

Safety checks and equipment tests are performed under limited supervision.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Inspect conveyor system and work area 

1.1

Conveyor equipment is checked prior to start-up in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturer safety checks and specifications, to ensure it is free from damage and obstructions that may limit operational capability

Hazards are identified, risks are assessed and control measures are implemented

Work area is checked to ensure it is safe and appropriate for required task

Check equipment operational capability 

2.1

Conveyors are inspected after start-up in accordance with manufacturer specifications, and workplace inspection specifications and procedures

Warning systems are checked for operational effectiveness

Records are checked to determine maintenance history and requirements and goods carried

Identify, assess faults and report inspection and testing results 

3.1

Faults are identified and assessments are made of potential effect on equipment operation for required work, and details are forwarded to relevant personnel in accordance with workplace procedures

Accurate reporting of inspection and testing results is kept in accordance with regulatory requirements, workplace policy and industry guidelines

Clear reference is made to any items that may affect future equipment safety/operation

Conveyor system is continually monitored for safe and efficient operation

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

  • applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards
  • applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures
  • communicating and working effectively with others
  • completing relevant documentation
  • modifying activities depending on operational contingencies, risk situations and environments
  • monitoring and prioritising work activities in terms of planned schedule
  • monitoring performance of conveyor equipment
  • operating and adapting to differences in equipment in accordance with workplace operating procedures
  • reading, interpreting and following relevant instructions, procedures, information and labels
  • reporting and/or rectifying identified problems, faults or malfunctions promptly, in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures
  • selecting and using required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and work health safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) standards
  • servicing conveyor equipment in terms of maintenance schedule and standard operating procedures
  • working systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods or equipment.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

  • conveyor purpose, characteristics, capabilities, requirements and limitations
  • documentation and record requirements
  • focus of operation of work systems, equipment, management and site operating systems for checking and assessing conveyor operational capability
  • function and principles of operation of belt cleaning systems
  • housekeeping procedures
  • operational safety requirements for conveyor concerned
  • problems that may occur when checking and assessing conveyor operational capability and appropriate action that can be taken to resolve these problems
  • regulations relevant to checking and assessing conveyor operational capability including:
  • current Australian Dangerous Goods (ADG) Code and relevant bond, quarantine or other legislative requirements
  • safe guarding of plant and equipment
  • conveyor operations guidelines
  • relevant WHS/OHS and environmental protection procedures and guidelines
  • site layout and obstacles
  • tools and equipment used and precautions and procedures that should be followed in their use
  • workplace procedures and policies for checking and assessing conveyor operational capability.

Assessment Conditions

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy applicable regulatory requirements, which include requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment include:

  • a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or simulations
  • applicable documentation including workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice, safe plant and equipment guidelines and operation manuals
  • relevant materials, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment currently used in industry.
