Modification History

Release 1.  This is the first release of this unit of competency in the TLI Transport and Logistics Training Package.

Application

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to connect and disconnect (refrigerated) reefer units in accordance with workplace requirements as part of work activities in the stevedoring, transport, distribution and allied industries.

It includes connecting and disconnecting reefer units to/from power sources and identifying and reporting any faults and damage with reefer unit operation.

Work is performed under some supervision generally within a team environment.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Connect reefer units to power sources 

1.1 

Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is selected and used in accordance with workplace procedures

1.2 

Hazards, including weather conditions, are identified, risks assessed and control measures implemented

1.3 

Reefer units are located and identified

1.4 

Reefer units are visually inspected, and faults and damage are identified and reported to relevant personnel in accordance with workplace procedures

1.5 

Reefer units are connected in accordance with workplace procedures

1.6 

Reefer units are checked to be running correctly after being connected in accordance with workplace procedures

Disconnect reefer units from power sources 

2.1 

Reefer units to be disconnected are identified, visually inspected, and faults and damage are reported to relevant personnel in accordance with workplace procedures

Reefer units are disconnected and cables are stowed appropriate for transport in accordance with workplace procedures

Assessment requirements

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

  • applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards
  • applying workplace procedures
  • connecting and disconnecting reefer units from power sources
  • interpreting and following relevant instructions and procedures
  • modifying activities depending on operational contingencies, risk situations and environments
  • operating and adapting to differences in reefer units in accordance with workplace procedures
  • reporting faults and damage in accordance with workplace procedures
  • using personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with workplace procedures.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

  • problems that may occur when connecting and disconnecting reefer units and appropriate action that can be taken
  • relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) and environmental workplace procedures
  • site layout and location of reefer units
  • workplace procedures for connecting and disconnecting reefer units.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must hold credentials specified within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must satisfy the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence and all regulatory requirements included within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment on connecting and disconnecting reefer units must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment must include:

  • relevant materials, tools, equipment, power source, reefer unit and PPE
  • applicable documentation, including workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals.
