Modification History

Release 4 . This is the fourth release of this qualification in the TLI Transport and Logistics Training Package. The following units have been updated in the general elective units:

  • HLTAID011 Provide first aid
  • TLIF0020 Safely access the rail corridor.

Release 3.  This is the third release of this qualification in the TLI Transport and Logistics Training Package. The following units have been added to the general elective units:

  • TLIB0007 Respond and rectify rail traffic autonomous operations
  • TLIC0005 Close down rail traffic from autonomous operations
  • TLIC0006 Set up rail traffic for autonomous operation
  • TLIF0015 Recognise the impact of human capabilities/limitations on human performance in a rail environment.

Release 2.  This is the second release of this qualification in the TLI Transport and Logistics Training Package. The following modifications have been made:

  • TLIE0002 Process workplace documentation has an updated code
  • TLIF0008 Apply safety critical communications in the rail environment added to general electives
  • Imported unit updated.

Release 1.  This is the first release of this qualification in the TLI Transport and Logistics Training Package.

Qualification Description

This is a qualification for a person engaged in train driving activities.

It involves a broad range of specialised knowledge and skills in varied contexts to undertake skilled work within a train driving environment.

It may include skills and knowledge required for specialised tasks or functions in known or changing contexts with responsibility for own functions and outputs.

Job roles 

This qualification is aligned to the following defined roles:

  • electric passenger train driver
  • freight train driver
  • heavy haul train driver
  • locomotive driver
  • train driver.

Please note: RTO to insert on the testamur, the specialist elective unit group selected from the group choice below.

No licensing legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this qualification.

Packaging Rules

A total of 21 units of competency  comprising:

12 core units  listed below, plus 

All units within one of the specialist elective unit groups  (job roles) from Group A, Group B, Group C, Group D or Group E listed below, plus 

4 elective units  from Group F general elective units listed below or remaining units not selected from a specialist elective unit group.

Up to 2 of the general elective units  may be selected from any relevant nationally endorsed Training Package. The general elective units must contribute to the vocational outcomes of the qualification.

Where imported units are selected, care must be taken to ensure that all prerequisite units specified are complied with.
