UNIT DESCRIPTOR:

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to assist deck officers in the conduct of routine deck measurements on a commercial vessel and the keeping of records of deck operational and maintenance measurements and routine equipment inventory data on board a vessel .

Application of the unit 

The unit has application in the qualification for an Integrated Rating, i.e. Certificate III in Transport&Distribution(Maritime Operations - Integrated Rating).

Licensing /legislative requirements 

The unit is consistent with the relevant sections of STCW 95 and Marine Orders under the Australian Navigation Act 1912, describing the specific requirements for Integrated Ratings.

Carry out routine measurements 

a

Equipment and instruments used to carry out routine deck measurements are prepared where required in accordance with established procedures and manufacturer's instructions

b

Routine measurements at sea, in port and while on duty are carried out in accordance with established procedures and the limits of responsibility of and integrated ratings on a vessel

c

Data collected from routine measurements is recorded or entered into the computer in accordance with established procedures

Assist in the completion of operations and maintenance documentation 

a

Inventory control sheets are completed as directed in accordance with shipboard procedures

Deck maintenance data is collected as directed in accordance with maintenance system procedures

Deck maintenance record sheets are completed in accordance with planned maintenance procedures

Deck operational data is collected and recorded as directed in accordance with established procedures

e

Where relevant, operational, maintenance and inventory data is entered into the vessel's computer database

Completed documentation is submitted to the deck officer in accordance with established procedures

Context of assessment

Assessment of competency must comply with the assessment requirements of the relevant maritime regulations

Assessment of this unit must be undertaken within relevant marine authority approved and audited arrangements by a registered training organisation:

As a minimum, assessment of knowledge must be conducted through appropriate written/oral examinations, and

Appropriate practical assessment must occur:

i

at the registered training organisation; and/or

ii

on an appropriate working or training vessel
