Application
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to complete routine maintenance and minor repairs on sport, fitness, aquatic or recreation activity equipment, and to appropriately store equipment. Complex repairs would be referred to specialist service technicians.
This unit applies to any type of sport, fitness, aquatic or recreation organisation including commercial, not-for-profit, community and government organisations. It can be applied to any type of environment, and to specific equipment used for any type of sport, fitness, aquatic or recreation activity.
It applies to individuals working in a range of sport, fitness, aquatic or recreation roles at different levels of responsibility. All would be guided by manufacturer instructions and organisational maintenance schedules.
The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.
No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1.3. Complete periodic safety and serviceability checks on emergency equipment according to organisational schedules.

2. Complete minor equipment repairs on activity equipment.

2.1. Tag, isolate and report faulty activity equipment according to organisational procedures.
2.2. Complete minor non-specialist equipment repairs according to manufacturer instructions.
2.3. Inspect and maintain maintenance tools regularly, and complete minor repairs according to manufacturer instructions.
2.4. Report other required repairs outside scope of skills and responsibility according to organisational procedures.
2.5. Complete repair and maintenance records according to organisational procedures.

3. Store activity equipment to maintain serviceable condition.

3.1. Handle activity equipment using safe manual handling techniques and store in appropriate conditions according to manufacturer instructions.
3.2. Maintain order of storage facility to allow safe and efficient access to equipment, and safe exit in the case of an emergency.
3.3. Secure storage facilities when unattended according to organisational procedures.

Performance Evidence
Evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit in the context of the job role, and:
- correctly interpret maintenance schedules and follow manufacturer instructions to complete the following repair and maintenance activities:
- two routine maintenance tasks for sport, fitness, aquatic or recreation activity equipment
- two periodic safety and serviceability checks on emergency equipment
- two minor non-specialist repairs on sport, fitness, aquatic or recreation activity equipment
- for each above repair and maintenance activity, complete accurate records
- identify, tag and report two pieces of faulty activity equipment
- store a total of ten mixed small and large pieces of sport, fitness, aquatic or recreation activity equipment, while maintaining safe and effective order of the storage facility.
Knowledge Evidence
Demonstrated knowledge required to complete the tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit:
- organisational procedures for maintaining, repairing, storing and securing activity equipment
- organisational role responsibilities, boundaries and reporting lines for repair and maintenance activities
- work health and safety practices for maintaining and storing activity equipment, including safe manual handling techniques for lifting and shifting bulky and heavy equipment
- specific to the sport, fitness, aquatic or recreation environment and activity equipment:
- key operational and safety features of activity and emergency equipment
- typical schedules for periodic inspection and maintenance
- tools, consumables and methods used to maintain activity equipment in safe and optimum condition
- tools and methods used to complete common types of minor non-specialist repairs
- types of repairs referred to specialist technicians
- conditions for storage to maintain serviceability, safety and clear access
- formats and inclusions of:
- organisational maintenance schedules
- manufacturer instructions for repairs and maintenance
- repair and maintenance records, reports, and fault tags, and how to complete these.
Assessment Conditions
Skills must be demonstrated in a sport, fitness, aquatic or recreation environment with equipment storage facilities. This can be:
- a workplace, or
- a simulated industry environment set up for the purposes of skills assessment.
Assessment must ensure use of:
- equipment relevant to the specific sport, fitness, aquatic or recreation environment and activities
- repair and maintenance tools, equipment and consumable resources
- maintenance schedules
- manufacturer instructions for repair and maintenance of activity equipment
- template repair and maintenance records, reports and fault tags
- organisational procedures for maintaining, repairing, storing and securing activity equipment.
Assessors must satisfy the Standards for Registered Training Organisations requirements for assessors.
