This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to interpret and apply the basic rules and regulations of tennis.

1. Update knowledge of basic rules and regulations of tennis.

1.1 Access a copy of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) rules of tennis.

1.2 Identify the basic rules of tennis .

1.3 Identify the roles and responsibilities of tennis officials .

1.4 Access a copy of the National Sporting Organisation (NSO) rules and etiquette for non-umpired matches. 

1.5 Access a copy of the NSO dress and equipment regulations .

2. Update knowledge of codes of behaviour.

2.1 Access NSO and other relevant codes of behaviour. 

2.2 Obtain information about consequences of code of behaviour violations.

3. Update knowledge of tennis tournament and competition pathways and regulations.

3.1 Identify national tournament pathway .

3.2 Identify local and regional competition pathways.

  • sport-specific tournament and competitions pathways
  • basic tournament regulations
  • interpret and apply basic tennis rules during court supervision.

Context of and specific resources for assessment 

Assessment must ensure:

  • application of the basic rules and regulations of tennis.

Assessment must also ensure access to:

  • information sources in order to collect sufficient information
  • a copy of the ITF rules, NSO specific rules, regulations and code of behaviour.

Method of assessment 

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

  • oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of basic tennis rules
  • case studies and problem-solving exercises to assess ability to interpret and apply basic tennis rules and regulations
  • oral or written questioning or interview to test knowledge of sport-specific code of behaviour, tournament and competition pathways and basic regulations.
